Not that bad

I've seen both the US version and this one obviously, and I must say it wasn't that bad. But it had a weird touch to it, maybe because I'm not used to China's every day culture. As I see it, in the US version the characters have more depth.
Theres much less drama in the Chinese one. For example the nerdy girl who would almost suicide herself wasn't that dramatic played out in the Chinese one.

Of course Andy Lau was pretty good. Though I think the tie tucked half way down into the shirt wasn't a good idea

I don't know about 'depth.' I think the cultures are so different that if you were Chinese, you would appreciate this movie and read more into the nuances that Western audiences just DON'T see. Don't see because you can't see from outside the Chinese culture.

it seems like almost exactly the same movie, scene for scene. though imho gong li is 50 times hotter then helen hunt.

I never saw the American film -- boycotting Mel Gibson and his idiotic 'religious extremism'. So I enjoyed this movie a lot -- especially Gong Li -- seen her half a dozen popular films, first one was Red Sorghum.

I gave it 8 stars here -- will give it 4 of 5 stars over at Netflix where I got it.
