Would you believe me if I told you that I was standing in a hole for that photograph?

No?

Fair enough.....I am not a tall man and it is only more obvious when standing next to someone as tall as Neil......

I would deny being the mythical creature to which you allude, but when Wiki says this:

"the leprechaun is said to be a solitary creature......who enjoys practical jokes"
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leprechaun#Folklore)

....then it is hard for me to refute......

Discerning
Luckily for me, while I was in Vegas over the weekend, Neil was also in Vegas where the shooting of Alongside Night is ongoing. I know this board would love me for horror stories but I can only really report good things! I met up with Neil and Kent Hastings for lunch on the Saturday.

I'll try to answer those questions, but again I cannot give you as much Lutz as I know you would like!

1. Why are you standing on the road behind a car? Did you stalk poor Neil and accost him, (with an accomplice), as he tried to enter his vehicle?
Even though I was very happy to get a cab, Neil gave me a lift back to the Strip after a few hours together - as I had been enjoying my time with the two of them I had forgotten to ask for a photo so it was only back at my hotel where we quickly snapped one at the drop-off point.

2. Did you have lunch afterwards? A buffet perhaps?
We did indeed. We met up at Makino, which is a sushi buffet (although it has hot food, salad etc) away from the main area. It was a great choice - I'm a fan of Oriental foods and everything I had here was great. I'm not a big fan of "all you can eat" buffets because it Europe it tends to means that they put quantity before quality, but this was very nice indeed. It was Neil's treat too, which I greatly appreciated!

3. Did Neil know you were coming? He seems to have showered and tidied up for the occasion.
Yes, we had arranged to meet up, although it wasn't like Neil had prepared for me - I know he had come from working on the film and during lunch he had a few calls from his production manager (or somebody) trying to deal with some issues they had that day. But in terms of personal hygiene I can assure you that he has a manly but clean fragrance!

4. Did you ask Neil if he is like Einstein, with 50 sets of the same clothing, or does he have just the one shirt, vest combo?
Strangely it never occurred to me to ask! And questions like that are why I thought it best to mention this meeting AFTER I'd had it, not before!

5. Are you really that short or is Neil really that tall?
Why can't it be both? I'm a manly 5'7" but in decent shoes I can hit 5'8" - but Neil is very tall, but I get used to being the shortest in any given group - this is why I normally try to travel with friends who are also jockey, but these 3 weeks in the US are for work, so none of them could come with me.

6. Did you show Neil your executive Vice-president Amazon business-card?
Subject never came up - bygones be bygones and all that!

7. Are you a cat and how tasty was the cream?
I was thinking about your face when you see the picture, that's partly why I was smirking so wide! I was also overcompensating because I am not a photogenic man at all, you can also see I've subconsciously puffed out my chest and lifted my shoulders to try and not look puny in the shot, which is why my shirt is tight which is a shame as that shirt has a very nice cut (I also had a lot of buffet, so that may explain it....to my credit I think I ate more than Neil and Kent!)

8. Is Kevin Sorbo in this film?
Very much so. I'll not say too much but Neil was kind enough to let me watch some footage on the laptop. The scenes were from the front end of the book, so included Sorbo. I quite liked what I saw, visually it looks better than Magdalene's but the main thing I liked was the same thing I think Neil did a good job with on that film, which is the casting side. The main leads were pretty likeable and had a good presence in Magdalene and it is the same here. I'm not just saying it, but the kid playing the lead role is really surprisingly natural and comfortable in front of the camera, in particular anytime he is with Sorbo they seemed to have a good chemistry there.

I did have a very nice few hours with the pair of them. I didn't know what to expect but Neil was very friendly, very personalable. You could see he had little patience for things that are not the way they should be and, to use a UK-saying, he "doesn't suffer fools gladly" but I was really glad that I got the chance to meet up with Neil and Kent!

"now you have to arrange a lunch meet/all-night drinking binge with The Mad Scotsman......"

That was the only thing I think you'd see as bad news - Mark is not going to be in Alongside Night and, like you said, he was still in the UK at the time of Neil starting shooting.

You were wrong about this meaning that the film wasn't going ahead though - it has just had to go ahead without him.....apparently they just couldn't get his work permits etc sorted in time to join the rest of the cast so it seems they took the decision to re-cast his role....

A shame - I know that those of us that saw his dual performance in Magdalene's were ready for more Gilvary....but it is not to be, despite the best efforts of Neil to make it work, I think he had a bigger perspective and the project had to move forward!

But if I ever do get to share a crafty pint with Mark, I'll be sure to grab a photo of that too!

I decided to try and grow a beard in late 2011 and I quite like it - it helps that I am not an attractive man so anything that partially covers my face is a win. The ginger color came gradually and then suddenly I had a ginger beard but I don't mind it too much.

In some places it means that I am viewed in the same way as you or I in the Western world may view a unicorn. When I was in South Korea in Spring 2012 I did get a few people ask to take a photograph with me; in China I didn't get the same attention but I was in Shanghai so I think they are used to seeing all sorts due to the size of the city.

I think that a decent beard of any color just makes a man more manly - an opinion 100% backed up by the picture of Neil and I sporting beards and looking epic. FACT.

No, I didn't!

Sadly ginger men do not test well with audiences - OK Damien Lewis and a few others are the exception but let me assure you that most audiences are repelled by the sight of a naked ginger man in all his glory.

So there is to be no place for me in his film!

HOWEVER, just to prove he does have a sense of humor about all this, Neil did include a reference to this board in one of the scenes I saw - I couldn't believe it when I saw it and had to ask "did you put X in there because of X" and he confirmed yes!

I don't want to spoil it, but don't worry - there is at least one in-joke in there for us IMDb users!
