Bianca too pretty to be a 'DUFF'

I quite enjoyed this movie surprisingly, but the one problem I had with this movie was Bianca was supposedly 'the duff' yet she was the best looking girl out of all of them, which kind of made it unbelieveable that she was such an outcast.
Did anyone else have this problem, and who would you have cast instead?

I think I would have tried to cast Alexandra Stamler from Role Models in the role.

Yeah, I know, but like with Meghan Trainor's song "All About that Bass" that' the whole point, the irony of being considered "fugly".

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.
"Jewish People driving German cars"-Sarah Silverman.

I didn't have a problem with this at all as it was addressed that bring a DUFF didn't mean one was ugly.

The DUFF doesn't need to be ugly,
Jess and Casey are conventionally gorgeous.

Bianca isn't ugly by any standards but she isn't conventionally as attractive as them.

I'm a huge Mae Whitman fan, but they took time to EXPLICITLY explain what a DUFF is. Did you watch the movie? Based on society's standards she was the least attractive. If both girls were a 10 and she was a 9, technically she'd still be the DUFF.

reply

I was just attracted to her the most out of any girl in the movie. So in my view she'd be the ultimate 10 where as everyone else would be below her attractiveness.

I disagree, but that's juts my opinion. I think she's unattractive. Not obese. But unattractive. Like I said, that's the opinion of a 45 yr old straight man. Not even sure why I watched this. Good reviews.

she clearly was worse looking than her 2 friends, thats the duff

The point is, she isn't as attractive or popular as the other two. It's sorta like 'wingman' - the guy who isn't as (popular, attractive, aggressive...).
The title is a put-down - it has little to do with looks or weight. The point is, she doesn't have the looks or status of the other two. Would they really be BFF's in real life???

reply

I think they could be BFFs in real life, especially if they've been friends for a long time. I remember one group of girls who I've known since we were about 7 years old. As kids, none of them were particularly cute, but puberty was definitely good to a few of them, one girl in particular ended up being supermodel-level gorgeous. They all remained inseparable, at least through high school.

If you are reading this, you have just lost The Game.

Yeah, I saw the trailer and thought to myself, "wait, that chick is supposed to be ugly and fat?" I mean, she's no runway model, but I sure wouldn't have been ashamed to take someone like her to prom in my day either. I'm just not buying the fundamental premise here.

This seems like a re-hash of The Truth About Cats and Dogs with Uma Thurman and Janeane Garafolo. If I had to pick from the two, I'd have picked Garafolo any day of the week. (Well, until I discovered she's bat-sh*t nuts, but of the two characters in the movie it would have been Garafolo's with no hesitation.)

And for all this talk about how she's not literally ugly or fat but simply doesn't fit society's standards of attraction... the problem with that hypothesis is even "average" looking girls still manage to get plenty of male attention unless they're complete bitches or social retards.

Im with you, man. I think she was better looking than both of her friends and even that mean popular girl.

designated is the first word - she was just designated the ugly fat friend

Come on, look at it from the producer's point of view. Movies with ugly people don't make a lot of money. Most people want to see beauty up there on the big screen. That's why movies want a famous actress as the lead, someone who makes the cover of People and Us magazines and who turns heads when she walks into a room.

So yeah, if the DUFF was a little independent film that didn't mind if it made $345 on its opening weekend, you might see Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) up there as the DUFF. She's got personality plus. But otherwise...let's get real. In the entire history of comedies, has a really, really fat or ugly actress ever played the lead? They are always the friend. Even in Shallow Hal where they put Gwynneth Paltrow into a fat suit, she was beautiful Gwynneth for 90% of the film and fat Gwynneth for 10%.
