If You Say Bianca Wasn't The Duff? Then U Didn't Get What "DUFF" Meant..

He even says it on the movie, "DON'T TAKE IT LITERAL", Duff doesn't actually mean fat, ugly, (what it stands for). You all need to calm down on the whole "wtf, she wasn't a duff, she wasn't fat, and she was actually hotter than her friends?" topics (LMAO to the last sentence).

He points out examples of Duffs in the movie at the party, and not one of them was fat or ugly. They were just "approachable" compared to their friends. Blanca's friends were hotter, period. Bianca was cute, she was NOT fat and she was NOT ugly, but she was the APPROACHABLE one.

THEREFOR SHE WAS THE DUFF.

Honestly just re-watch the movie again if you're so confused.

reply

You're right. Just like back in my day, we used to use the term "grenade" instead of "DUFF."
The term "grenade" in this sense comes from soldiers isolating a grenade explosion by jumping on top of it in order to save their comrades. And in terms of trying to pick someone up, the "grenade" is the uglier friend and your wingman "jumps the grenade" by taking one for the team by isolating the unattractive friend by chatting with them, leaving you open to talk to the hotter friend. But no, people aren't literally grenades.

reply

That's a legit thing? When is "back in the day" for you? I thought "grenade" originated from those Jersey Shore degenerates. Haha!

reply

Exactly. I swear some of the questions on the imdb boards are from people who didn't pay attention during the movie.

reply

Seriously, Like it's insane. SO many clueless.

reply

The term is intentionally degrading. Any justification of it is a form of bullying.

If you respond to this like a bully with personal attacks then I won't respond. I will respond if you have something worthwhile to say.

reply

Quiet, DUFF.

reply

It means "This film is a complete ripoff of Pretty in Pink, She's All That, Mean Girls and a dozen other BETTER films."

reply

It's hard not to take it literally when the name itself has the word fat and ugly in it.

Actually at first if I had heard of this word
and of course didn't know what it really meant  .

I would have thought that Bianca didn't like that brand of beer  .

Of course I like my version of this word better
( IMPO - it's way less hurtful sounding than the original word is  ) :

Designated

Uniquely

Fabulous

Friend

This movie doesn't get what a DUFF is. And yeah, I know this post is old, but fk it, it's still annoying me.

The general concept of what a Duff is, is pretty easy to pick up. However, hotness is subjective. If it weren't, why would Bella Thorne's character be taken seriously? According to conventional beauty standards, Casey and Jess were a billion times more attractive than her, so technically she was a Duff in compared to them; and yet she was considered "the hot popular one" and they were just considered hotter than Bianca.

So, what's the point of this term then, if the film itself won't adhere to its own definition? Answer: This movie isn't trying to make a statement about beauty stereotypes. It's endorsing one specific type under the pretense that looks don't matter if you just believe in yourself so it can rag on its main character and all the characters that fall under the term Duff. Meanwhile, Bianca is barely friends with her two attractive co-stars, who are literally only there to serve as the eye candy the movie keeps telling us they are, as is Bella Thorne's character (let's face it, her name doesn't matter).
