Susan Sarandon wearing that Sheriffs uniform

As soon as I saw her in this get up I wasnt buying it... There was something completely unnatural about her wearing the Sheriffs uniform.. Has nothing to do with her being a woman either because a very pregnant woman in Frances McDormand pulled that one off just fine with no suspension of disbelief...Susan Sarandon just looks silly in that get up...If she is in fact a detective shoudntshe be wearing plain clothes anyways ??? Someone should of said something, The director or wardrobe..Somebody...

I totally agree, not just the uniform but she couldn't have been more wrong for the role. She didn't convince me as anyone capable of handling any position of power even in some podunk town. It just didn't measure up to a thriller. It took way too long floundering around, didn't know what it wanted to be and when it became serious all I could do was laugh at the ridiculous killer. This is not a thriller I would recommend despite it having a solid cast.

You just paraphrased the review that's on Roger Ebert's site. Congratulations on not having your own thoughts and opinions!

Her persona is perhaps too strong to make it believable. I also thought in the beginning it's an upper class lady wearing that uniform.

Let go of her past beauty queen roles and let her act! She was convincing as a small town sheriff working around small minded men who kept her down because of her gender. Give Susan some credit, she surprised me in this middle aged tired out role who kept going despite her circumstances.

reply

"... who kept her down because of her gender." Or because she was an alcoholic addicted to painkillers who had tried to kill herself and who, before the killings, was obviously pretty detached from her job.

Anyway, I thought Sarandon was fine in the role. I certainly didn't find her particularly "upper class". Remember that Hazel's mother was a judge; she came from a middle-class background, so there's no reason why she would have acted trashy. And why would her being a cop imply that she should have whatever manners it would take not to be perceived as an "upper class lady"?

As for the uniform, I think it was supposed to be uncomfortable fit - literally. She's only the acting chief. Presumably before the previous chief died or retired, she was a detective in plainclothes, like Ray. Wearing the uniform is probably new to her and doesn't feel completely natural.

She didn't look quite right in the uniform, but that may have been deliberate. It was part of the storyline that she was unfit for the job because she was mixing painkillers and booze to help with the back pain.

I found the movie unsatisfactory because none of the characters, including Sarandon's or the killer, were fleshed out in any real depth. It was hard to understand their motivations as the movie progressed. A flaw in the writing rather than the acting, I think.

She could have looked better, she looked very tired in this movie and other movies too. Why no makeup?

reply

I didn't buy it at first. But as the movie went on, and you understood her character, it made sense. She acted and looked like a slob. She didn't care about much of nothing.

I love Susan Sarandon but it was very much Susan does Fargo.

I think you all sort of missed the point. The costume was part of her character in that she was intentionally disheveled.

Yes,Itsthatguysme, most likely her appearance in real life would have resulted in termination, but as for the fictional character, you gather that she had been allocated to a lowly position and no longer cared how she appeared, for she knew no one would fire the person who's accepted the position that nobody wanted.
