Well, that does it!

I've been reading peoples' comments on movies here for a while now. And I've found that, very gradually, the comments have begun to fail to reflect the quality of the film I'm thinking of watching.

I've wondered about this, why it happens, what causes it. And I finally think I understand.

I think most of the people who write down their impressions of new movies here are children. Maybe children aged in their teens, but children nevertheless. They're apparently so piteously ignorant of what constitutes a "good" film, that they wouldn't recognise one if it bit them!! Maybe it's because they're hopelessly ruined by their ridiculous, childish "comic hero" movies and cheaply-made "spooky" movies, and all the other movies that are nothing more than the litter found on other peoples' editing room floors.

Anyone who failed to see the quality in this film does not deserve the privilege of watching films. They'd be better off sticking to their juvenile paper comics, and stop watching films altogether. Certainly they should stop writing "reviews" about the films they watch!

Susan Sarandon was brilliant. Ellen Burstyn was brilliant, (and beautiful). Everyone else was excellent. The direction was excellent. The cinematography was excellent. The story was fascinating. And, (despite the fact that no giant robots appeared at the end), the ending was subtly clever.

From now on, I intend to use any negative IMDB "reviews" to guide me in choosing what to definitely watch!

There will be both positive and negative comments on all films...

You know, I have to agree completely with your comments. I thought the film was excellent and I was totally surprised by the rating. I never go by ratings or "professional reviews" anyway, but I am surprised by them.

But the film needed a dynamic director. Maybe someone with a unique directorial style and flourish. I'm thinking rob zombie or the guy who made the exorcist.

Judging by that kind of quote you may get a point here.

so should we get off your lawn now?

its ridiculous to write off the tastes of an entire generation of people just because of their age. do your old friends ALL agree with everything you think or are they capable of holding differing opinions without you lumping them all together and calling them idiots for doing so? Im old enough to be "old" myself but I know plenty of people half my age who are very knowledgeable about film and art in general and who appreciate a lot more than "giant robot" films. Try not to be such a crank...

You sound like a more-or-less thinking person so I'm surprised you missed the key part of my post. I said "Most". I said "Most people who write down their impressions"... etc. I also said, "I think..."

I didn't "write off" the tastes of an entire generation. I questioned the tastes of a segment of that generation which writes its opinions about movies on these boards. I have many friends and acquaintances in that particular segment and I acknowledge their opinions.

That doesn't preclude my belief that "most" of the people who write reviews here and who give disproportionately low scores to any film that doesn't have giant robots are very probably "children" with children's tastes. Please note that I didn't use the term "idiots". That was your choice.
