True Detective

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, which I had pre-determined to be not very good, mainly by the reviews.........I normally don't write much and would be offended to be called a 'movie critic' ...

This movie, like most, had mistakes and holes - but, at least to me, not glaring.

To me the most remarkable part is that it is so reminiscent of the new 'True Detective' series which is rated mostly 8s and 9s and this barely pulls a 6 - when the pace and tenor seem to be so much alike.

I give it an 8.

Well it falls into the typical movie makers gimmick of ignoring real police procedures and makes an otherwise interesting story fall apart as a result.
Susan Sarandon and Ellen Burstyn were fun to watch however.
When filmmakers actually start to listen to the police technical advisors they hire that's when I can suspend my disbelief again.

I'm probably going to be verbally whipped about the head and neck for saying this, but I kinda liked this movie way better than Season 2 of True Detective! I absolutely love, love Vince Vaughn and Colin Ferrell. But they were wasted on this program!

Season 1 was better, even though I was skeptical of the chemistry between Harrelson and McConaughey. That turned out well; I just didn't care for the rambling around with the script, or the waffling back and forth between past/present.

This movie has some problems, sure. Why is Hazel an alcoholic? How is Ellyn Burstyn her mother?? Why did Mama trust Simon? I get that she was desperate, but I would've gone to the next bigger city and Medical Center, not allow some NutJob to poison her.

Why was Wingate gay? One of those details that really should mean something, yet it didn't. Topher Grace is just precious, and I liked him a lot here, too. Why was Gil Bellows' character so willing to step back and allow Hazel to do shoddy police work, be on the job drinking? She was his immediate supervisor, but I still wouldn't have worked with someone like that (with a gun!!) without trying to help them...

Wingate said he decided to relocate to a small town because his partner had died and his former station had an issue with him being gay.
When he'd just arrived, the other detectives asked if he was sent there for sleeping with someone's wife.
I think his sexuality was merely used as a plot device to bring him to where the story was taking place, without making him into an *beep*

If you judge it as if it as aTV film it is pretty good.
I would not pay 15 bucks to see it in a theater, but the acting was very good and the story held my interets.
