Instantly dated?

So many of the gags in this are currently-topical...I'll bet viewers in 20 years will just draw a blank and wonder what's supposed to register as "funny".

In 5 years

Okay Im 14 now, but I still can hate movies.

reply

It's been five years. The movie is pretty much forgotten by now.

I haven't seen this movie but my impression is that this is kinda their reaction now. But even if it was actually "good" I think it's contemporary nature would confuse viewers later. As for 20 years, I think it will be well forgotten by then. How many comedy bombs from 20 years ago can you name? You get classic turkeys but they can never be comedies because their appeal lies in being so bad they're unintentionally funny.

reply

Any "gag" in this film is stupid no matter what date they're used in. But this film is starting to become forgotten, and once the TWILIGHT series is over, I think it'll disappear. It will never have the cult status of NAKED GUN or AIRPLANE.

Exactly. Naked Gun and Airplane are amazing and hilarious. Was sad when Nielsen died.

reply

Loved those...even Airplane2

reply

To be honest it will be because I didn't get over half of the references. Serious question: Who are the Kardashians and what do they have to do with a parody about vampires that aren't vampires?

reply

Agreed.

exactly and I agree, it is dated even now

reply

I wouldn't say they're instantly dated. Quite the opposite.

They're kind of like pop-culture time machines. In five years, you can watch them and be like "Oh yeah, I remember that!" I ean, look at the cult following Epic Movie and Date Movie have received.

In case you don't remember the references in 5 years, Seltzer and Friedberg have put subtle clue in the films, like "Hey, It's the fat guy from Borat!"

Historians, 50 years from now, will watch these films as a 'Cliffnotes' version of American society.

Nah, most folks will still get this flick far into the future:

Most of the gags revolve around the real Twilight Saga which shall remain in the public consciousness for decades to come.

'Not another Teen movie' was a spoof of teen movies, most of which had their hey-day in the 1980s, but folks still got the jokes from that one because those '80s teen flicks had remained in the public consciousness for so long.

reply

If people are still watching this in 20 years, I'll cry... Even the people who made it designed it to be throwaway!

I don't know, aren't the Kardashians still in tabloid news all the time? And isn't Jersey Shore still on?
And I don't think Black Eyed Peas or Lady Gaga will be completely forgotten in another 15 years. Taylor Swift is selling out NFL stadiums today so she's still big.
Alice in Wonderland and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are also referenced very briefly but those have a lot of staying power.

The only reference that I thought was really obscure was the monologue interruption by Gossip Girl. Wasn't that an early 2000's show? Still you didn't need to know anything about the show to get the joke.

Jonas Brothers are probably pretty dated but way the joke was done in this movie was just brilliant.

Becca mentions needing to Tivo Wizards of Waverly Place, which I thought was just a simple in joke to the fact Fisherman Scully is played by the same actor who plays the dad in that show.

But overall, most of the jokes were about Twilight and how overdone the teen angst theme is, how Jacob takes his shirt off for no reason, how people find Bella attractive for no reason and so on.

More importantly, the plot is fairly straightforward to follow and you don't need to understand these pop culture jokes to follow the movie.

No, it's not.

Six years out and I would say yea, it's somewhat dated by now.
