Herzog and 3D

I drove over to see this movie today, and it can only be seen in 3D.

3D is a theater gimmick used so that dips with cameras cannot video
the film. It is basically a copy-protection scheme that costs all of us
about 50% more.

I sadly said thank you, but no, I will not be seeing this movie.

This is idiotic, why the stupid 3D? I don't want 3D and most film-makers
and especially classic film-makers know 3D is a stupid technical gimmick.

It just seems that as effects and these gimmicks get greater and greater
the quality of movie just keeps going down.

I used to think Herzog was pretty interesting, but maybe he is being
paid a lot of money to front for this new idiotic technology and sell out
his integrity.

Booooooooo!

Somebody drank their hater-ade today.

I don't get the anti-bootlegging argument at all. 99% of the "new" 3D films are also released in a 2D version. So the "dips" with cameras can just go to the 2D showing and bootleg it there.

This movie is a small documentary currently in very limited release. This limited release is why this movie is so difficult...if not impossible...to find in 3D. I can't imagine that Hollywood conspired to resurrect 3D so that "dips" wouldn't be able to bootleg this little documentary.

For regular Hollywood movies, I don't think 3D adds much. Occsssionally they have used it well. But often it is a useless addittion. And even in the best examples of 3D in regular Hollywood movies, very little is lost if you see it in 2D instead. But in the case of this movie...a documentary, not a regular movie.....the 3D absolutely adds to the movie....it makes you feel like you are in the cave.

The movie itself is a bit on the boring side. Even at only 90 minutes, it felt long. But what made it worthwhile was stunning visual impact of seeing inside of this incredible cave and viewing the spectacular art. Much of that visual impact would be lost in 2D.

I have told people it is worth seeing ONLY if you see it in 3D. I told them it's not worth it to see in 2D....you would lose too much. And I have never recommended the 3D version over the 2D verion of a regular Hollywood flick.

By the way, while your conspiracy theory regarding bootlegging makes no sense and falls apart immediately under close inspection....there is a real reason 3D is so popular, and it has nothing to do with artistic merit. They do it for the money. They get to charge a few extra bucks for tix to a 3D showing, so it improves the box-office.

Your extreme dislike for 3D is comical. And while I agree that it is usually a gimmick used to grab a few bucks without adding much....if anything....to the film, you are truly missing out if you don't realize that in certain, limited cases 3D really can be special and can create an amazing movie-going experience. This documentary and a few of the IMAX-3D films are the reasons why I am very happy 3D film exists.

I hope your bitterness doesn't continue to keep you from experiencing those occassional gems where 3D really makes a film special.
