Definitely agree about the Tamil version being MUCH better out of the two. I honestly think this version should have gone to Cannes, not the one with Abhi. I won't go so far as to say that Abhishek ruined the role of Beera/Veera, but I just didn't think he was right for the role. The crappy editing for the Hindi version didn't help matters much for him either. Did the editor sabotage the film on purpose?
Anyway, Vikram's performance was simply mind-blowing. His chemistry with Aishwarya Rai was crackling onscreen as well. He seems like a very natural actor. Prithviraj was actually (imho) the better "Dev" and showcased his talents in the film. Plus it helps that his voice is so goddamn sexy. There's a reason Ratnam chose him, and I stand by his decision. He had great chemistry with Aishwarya as well. I mean, I could watch Kalvare Kalvare over and over again and never get sick and tired of it. Funny how she generates more sexual tension with two men who are not her husband than with the man she is married to.
I know that the Mani Ratnam fans will be divided on this one. I'm no film critic, and I haven't seen much of Ratnam, but I know a good film when I see one by this fact alone: The replay factor. I have seen Raavan once, but I have watched Raavanan over and over and over again. Unfortunately, I'm Thai American and can't understand Tamil. The subtitles for the DVD I bought weren't atrocious, but was pretty hard to follow.
Also, A BIT OF A SPOILER!! but my only gripe is the detached arm scene. Okay, so I know Veera chopped off his brother-in-law's arm, but it made me sit there in disbelief to think that the BIN would still be conscious and have the energy to hold onto his freaking bloody, severed arm while being tied up in tree.
