Raavan vs. Raavanan - which is better?

Having seen both films (and speaking/understanding neither Hindi nor Tamil) I have to say Raavanan is the MUCH better film, primarily because Vikram's performance in the title role is so much better than Mr. Bachchan's - and oddly, he also has much better chemistry with Mrs. Bachchan. Abhi's performance is so over the top it makes it hard to care about the character, and while it took some getting used to Ash's voice being dubbed, overall I thought the Tamil version much more effective (although I liked Govinda's take on Hanuman better than the Tamil actor's). And while another thread claims Prithviraj ruined Raavanan, I thought he was fine (although obviously not as good as Vikram in Raavan in the same role). Anyone agree/disaree?

Agree with you..Raavanan is way better than Raavan..Vikram is without doubt d best among them..But i think Prithviraj was just perfect for that role..But i think this movie is watchable for three things..the location, the Vikram factor & the cinematography...This is way below par concerning Mani ratnam is the director..

Im with you on this one. Raavanan is a much better film then Raavan. Vikram is a amazing actor. He did his character to perfection. He played the Veera character to perfection, he never fails! Just look at his previous body of work. Sethu, Pithamagan and Anniyan. Mind-blowing films! If you like Vikram's acting in this film, then you should definitely watch those other films! He played the Veera character to perfection, he never fails!

Abhishek was terrible though, overacted in almost every scene which ruined raavan. Even there was Vikram great job playing Dev. Mani Ratnam does his best work in tamil and the actor is always better in the tamil version of his films. Just like Yuva.

I'm from Sweden and they showed Raavanan on the Stockholm Film Festival and people was really surprised by the acting, the cinematography and the music for the film. Imagine how much they would like it if they understand the language?

Im a Swede(Nordic ancestry)and this is one of my favourite movies, saw it once and since then i had to and now do - own it.
Vikram is by far my favourite Bollywood actor, you forget youre watching a 'Bollywood' movie as such when hes on screen, there is him and his performance..even bad subtitles do not take anything away from his performance.
Vikram - you need to work more!

Definitely agree about the Tamil version being MUCH better out of the two. I honestly think this version should have gone to Cannes, not the one with Abhi. I won't go so far as to say that Abhishek ruined the role of Beera/Veera, but I just didn't think he was right for the role. The crappy editing for the Hindi version didn't help matters much for him either. Did the editor sabotage the film on purpose?

Anyway, Vikram's performance was simply mind-blowing. His chemistry with Aishwarya Rai was crackling onscreen as well. He seems like a very natural actor. Prithviraj was actually (imho) the better "Dev" and showcased his talents in the film. Plus it helps that his voice is so goddamn sexy. There's a reason Ratnam chose him, and I stand by his decision. He had great chemistry with Aishwarya as well. I mean, I could watch Kalvare Kalvare over and over again and never get sick and tired of it. Funny how she generates more sexual tension with two men who are not her husband than with the man she is married to.

I know that the Mani Ratnam fans will be divided on this one. I'm no film critic, and I haven't seen much of Ratnam, but I know a good film when I see one by this fact alone: The replay factor. I have seen Raavan once, but I have watched Raavanan over and over and over again. Unfortunately, I'm Thai American and can't understand Tamil. The subtitles for the DVD I bought weren't atrocious, but was pretty hard to follow.

Also, A BIT OF A SPOILER!! but my only gripe is the detached arm scene. Okay, so I know Veera chopped off his brother-in-law's arm, but it made me sit there in disbelief to think that the BIN would still be conscious and have the energy to hold onto his freaking bloody, severed arm while being tied up in tree.
