Tattoos out of place

For a teacher as intelligent as Jim Wilkes, tattoos were way out of place. If the actor that played him really has tattoos, they should have covered them.

I thought it seemed out of place, too. Jim just didn't strike me as the type of guy to have tattoos.

His tattoos were definitely out of place, given the character he was playing. There is actually not that much difference between the 1990s and the present time. Rather, it depends largely on your ethnic and social background and also profession. It would be fine (now and back then) if the film character was in the armed forces, entertainment business, or professional sports. But a schoolteacher?! Tattoos might be fine with Angelina Jolie, but if you are a female schoolteacher you don't want your body to look like a roadmap.

I admit that I don't know any schoolteacher with tattoos - except perhaps small, inconspicuous ones in places you would seldom be able to see. Jim's tattoos in the film were not only huge, but he had what appeared to be Chinese characters covering one entire forearm. You may think that putting on strange foreign language characters is "cool", but it would definitely be unwise if you know nothing about the language. The words might well mean "I'm a bad guy" or even something obscene.

In the beginning he told the class that he was a professional beach-volleyball (played on the tour) before player so that makes the tattoos more appropriate

Good point Fabian, the fact that he used to live a different lifestyle considering his previous occupation makes the tat's not really that unusual.

pro volleyball is more than a lifestyle. it's a state of mind. 

What weird comments! A lot of intelligent people, including me (an engineer) and school teachers I know have tattoos.

reply

But why? He used to play beach volleyball. Have you seen professional beach volleyball players?
