Why does this film get good ratings?

Pacific Rim was BAD just BAD. The plot-line was overly predictable. The acting was nothing special.

I saw it in the cinema but I was actually bored. Boohoo so his brother died in a war. *beep* happens grow up. Lots of people die in wars. If everyone who lost someone in a war went into hiding well it would be over pretty quickly. Also the second the "hot female" came into picture it was obvious what would happen.

This film is great - if you're about 10 years old.

We get it. You're obsessed with 10 year olds. Move on, please.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

Love this movie. Very entertaining. Oh, by the way, I am 60.

reply

I'm in my 20's and I love this movie, and I know other adults from various ages love this movie too, so there goes your theory.

mordante says 'Pacific Rim' was BAD just BAD because had an overly predictable plot and the acting was nothing special.

Rates 'Alice in Wonderland' 9/10.

The irony of this entire thread is absolutely hilarious.

reply

why are you so obsessed with what people rate movies? If someone doesn't like a movie they don't like it, what they rate other films shouldn't matter... i'm sure me and you and everyone else has weird ratings because they found generally accepted as great movie bad, or a generally accepted as bad movie good, it doesn't mean anything other than everyone has different tastes.

I'll tell you why. The guy is coming off as pretty disparaging overall.

SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET WAS DISPARAGING!!!!!! >.<

the replies you got here make the average YouTube commentator look both civilized and well-mannered.

Seriously, the comment section for many of the topics on IMDB are just pure cancer... No idea - really none - how someone could give you a hard time, especially if they took a moment to stop and think about who they were insulting, who you replied to in the first place (I'm convinced they don't care about that much context, though - we don't even need to know what you originally replied to at all!), and why. But no, that information isn't needed to give you a couple snarky replies that add zero substance

I don't get how IMDB has such a horrid comment section. It used to be pretty good, but now I'm seeing and am reminded of it everywhere. Seriously, these threads are just one KYS away from being youtube. If I wanted gut-reaction level insults and bant, I'd go to 4chan, except they can be way more clever over there.

Your post makes no sense. The OP comes here and attacks a film, then someone attacks a film he likes and you ask "What does it matter?"

Well, obviously we all have our own opinions, so if you are going to attack someone else opinion, odds are they will attacks yours in return, so either don't attack others opinion or be ready to get it back at you.

agreed the dialogue was awful, there was no type of character development, i couldnt have cared less about the characters or their emotions, and the plot was just bad and completely predictable. Of course, this wouldn't be a problem because the movie at the end of the day is just a special effects action fest, which typically aren't good at any of those things, but this movie had very little action (relative to the 2 hours spent on poor attempts at emotional scenes) and the fight scenes were awful, it was also about 20 minutes too long.

Fight scenes were awful? By what parameters? Did you expect kung fu? People just spew crap without real arguments and expect their opinions to hold some sort of validity.

Film is great for what it is and what it's meant to be. Fight scenes were pretty good considering it's about the clash of heavy giants and not some flying shaolin monks.

reply

Yep, it's not for everyone, but I grew up watching "Godzilla", "King Kong", "Giant Robot", "Voltron", etc, this is for the kid in all us Gen X'ers, and kids today, my nephews loved it.

reply

Haven't seen the film since it was in theaters, but from what I remember the action scenes in Pacific Rim are far superior to those in f.ex. Transformers.
They are very clear and give off a realistic feel(well, I guess creatures/robots can't be that large and move like that) in that the big creatures move slowly and have weight to them. IF such big creatures did walk around that is.

I agree with you about all the special effects and CGI in this movie, they were spectacular and great to look at and they looked very realistic too. The special effects in this movie is without a doubt some of the best I've ever seen, and I have seen ALOT of movies so far in my life...I'm surprised it did not win an Oscar for special effects or at least nominated for it, IMO it totally deserves it.

reply

there was no type of character development,

are you serious? there were definitely some character development for some of the characters...

Raleigh - in the beginning of the movie he was a broken man who was still so caught up in his past after his brother died, he was living day by day in the slumps, didn't really have the will to move forward with his life. But through his interactions with Mako, he started to gradually accept the past and move forward with his life, and he eventually regained his will to live for the future again.

Mako - Similar to Raleigh, she also had a traumatic past and she used her past trauma and turned it into a strength and her motivation to destroy the Kaijus and protect the future of humanity, she did struggle with the drift initially but eventually she overcame that hurdle and formed a strong partnership and friendship with Raleigh.

Chuck - He started out as this extremely cocky, annoying, egotistical jerk who constantly belittled Raleigh and determined to stay alive, but when Raleigh and Mako saved him using Gipsy Danger, he started to appreciate Raleigh and Mako more and he became a more respectful person...and even quite heroic in the end when he willingly sacrificed his life for the mission.

Of course the writers could've fleshed out the characters more, there was always room for more improvement, but I would not say that there "wasn't any character development at all", some of the characters did have some character development at least...just that it could've been more.

I have a friend who is over the moon for this movie. I'm watching it for the first time. I'm a little over half way in and I simply can't stay focused on it. It's not grabbing me. The background music is annoying at times. I would have really gone another way. The fight scenes are uninspiring, and the dialogue feels like it was written by a college frat party. The best scene I found in the movie was the girl's flashback, other than that there were no other people in it. No bodies even, very weird, or self centered, take your pick.
Two things, don't make me watch this ever again, and two, don't make me watch this ever again.

Are you really going to measure a blockbuster about giant robots fighting giant monsters by the plot and acting? Pacific Rim does not pretend to be about anything but action and destruction, which I for one think is a good thing. If I want to watch an emotional film about social issues and minor human stories, I won't go watch a movie about invading godzillas from another dimension, and neither should you. The people who rated this movie >7, did not rate it according to the acting, nor the plot.

reply

As I said in my post, I wouldn't rate it over those things, except there weren't many action scenes and the ones that were there were clunky and boring

Azula >>>>

reply

I think it succeeds because nobody pretended they where making art. It is a big, dumn and fun movie about Big Giant Robots fighting Big Giant Monsters. The storyline was basic and straightforward (which is where a lot the Transformer sequals started to go off the rail).

reply

yep, thats it, but u forget that transformers wants to be action, this one wants to be entertaining,,, trans is bad this one is good ;)

reply

People have opnions move on!

reply

I found the movie terribly bad as well, while I enjoyed Evangelion.
First it looked like written for kids, in fact, it makes Evangelion look serious. And the rest that wasn't in Evangelion, was just a bunch of SF clichés.

Second, it's a visual random mess, on the same level as Transformers, both probably targetting the same audience.

reply

That's pretty much what the film was going for to begin with...

Second, it's a visual random mess, on the same level as Transformers, both probably targetting the same audience.

You clearly haven't seen 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'...

reply

Yep. The audience that flocks to the theaters, in droves and spends lotsa money. Anyone who's under the illusion that movie makers don't target this audience, needs to get out more.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
