Why not use the sword from the start?!

Considering how effective that sword was, wouldn't they have been using it all along?

Or just build a machine over the hole comprised of spinning blades, turning their entry point into a waste disposal, as clearly bladed weapons are their weak point.

cuz you always save the sword for last in Tokosatsu shows.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?c

Alternative in-universe explanation: the Kaiju are learning, so you don't show your hand and use your best weapons unless you have to.

reply

This is the best explanation I've seen thus far. Count me as one of those that also wondered why they didn't use the sword more often. Makes complete sense to use it only when necessary since the Kaiju were learning and adapting constantly.

reply

That. Plus wasn't the kaiju blood toxic? Maybe they didn't want slice open one unless there were no other options.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

That's pretty good also.

So now there's two good reasons for saving the sword for last:

1- Don't want the monsters/aliens learning about it so they can find a way to counter it.
2- Kaiju blood is toxic. Slicing them open and spilling blood everywhere would be bad for people/the environment.

If the Kaiju were learning, why didn't they send multiple Kaiju from the start?

Why didn't the humans send out multiple robots to fight each Kaiju?

reply

Them being able to learn doesn't really have any bearing on the rate they come through the breach. We don't know what the properties of the breach are, maybe it's becoming more stable over time and can allow more Kaiju through without collapsing. Who knows?

They did send out multiple Jaegers many times. They mention it in the film, but by the time we see them there are only a few left.

there's another possibility you have to consider...maybe Raleigh did not know about the sword in the beginning? Remember that Gipsy did not have the sword when Raleigh co-piloted it with his brother...the sword was a new addition that was added to Gipsy during its upgrade, and it was Mako's own design so maybe only Mako knew about the sword and did not tell Raleigh about it beforehand until towards the end of the battle when they needed it?

reply

The reason is in the film, but it is mentioned only once. Kaiju blood is toxic, therefore you want to spill as little of it as possible. So humans built weapons (Yeagers) that basically bludgeon the kaiju to death, spilling minimal blood in the process. Gypsey Danger's sword was a last resort weapon. The film could have usd a few sentences more in the early voiceover to explain this.
