Why the change of instruments?????

This movie is based on a great graphic novel by the same name. It is NOT a violin in the original. It was a tar. Why did they swap a traditional Iranian instrument for a western one? Seems to change the meaning of the story. I have not see the movie yet, but I will watch it tonight tho'

It is a traditional Iranian instrument. The book takes place in Iran. When he morns the loss of this tar, he is morning more than the musical instrument. It is his gift, this culture, his country that he loses.

I thought the movie was mediochre.

You should check out the book. It is really good.

Although I have only just recently discovered the movie and have yet to read the book, I think that the instrument change was nothing more than what the director felt was necessary to become more relate-able to a worldwide audience. Your question, as well as the follow up, now makes me more interested in reading the book. And if my position changes, I will update this post accordingly.
