What was Bruce Dern's endgame?

What on earth was he going to get out of this that would make it worth giving up his home and his postal worker pension?

reply

good question, i dont know

reply

I assumed he would get part of the money, but I don't know. I wasn't giving the movie my full intention honestly.

Good question. I see nobody has answered this yet. Anyone....?

Half of the reward?

reply

It doesn't make sense. A postal job would have a pretty good pension so half the reward money wouldn't be near enough money to make him want to disappear for the rest of his life and get no pension from his job.

How much would half of the reward amount to?
How old was Dern's character? 79? And with a bad lung condition.
How much would he make monthly on his retired mailman pension?

reply

It was a $100,000 reward IIRC so he would get $50,000. He didn't have a life threatening lung condition. It was asthma; you can live a long time with asthma if you take care of yourself.

My point still stands. He would have to go into hiding for the rest of his life and would have to live on the $50,000 with absolutely no outside help and could never show his face again in that town. The $50,000 would wither pretty quickly if he had to move to another town and start over again. This is the only huge hole in an otherwise believable story.

Let's say a ticket to Brazil is a thousand bucks, he could live in some small beach town in Brazil with the 49 thousand dollars left for the rest of his life getting laid with gorgeous young women, nice weather and quality cheap booze, could he do the same in Cut Bank with his mail man pension?

They really never said. Even if he was to get half of that money, after taxes it would come out to 35k each.. That's not even including the 5k they lost paying the Indian lol. A pension is worth way more than that imo.
