please explain the sniffing scene

That wasn't an interrogation, it was divorce proceedings between the cop and her husband. She got up and sniffed him why? Because she was overwhelmed by what was going on, because she still missed and wanted him (as became clear later on in the movie). It was a strange gesture but came across as a primal necessity.
