Italians

Both of these guys are obviously Italian (DeNiro refers to himself as such), and have usually played Italian characters. Especially in their most famous roles. So why on earth make one Irish and the other non-descript?

reply

DeNiro is Italian and Irish, and rather well-known for playing both Irish (Jimmy Conway) and Italian (Young Vito Corleone) mobsters. This time around, why not play that he had an Irish dad and Italian mum instead of the other way around?

And "nondescript" just means that the character isn't paying attention to his ancestry, unlike McDonnen. Most boxers are like that and don't have an ancestry shtick, you know.

Besides...it adds a little more distance between Sharp and "The Italian Stallion" (and between McDonnen and LaMotta) which was the point. These are two different characters.

Deal with it.

Deniro identifies himself as Italian eventhough he's only half. According to his bio, he adopted his grandfather's culture. He has also accepted Italian achievement awards.

AS far as Sharp goes, it has nothing to do with the character not paying attention to his ancestry. Sharp is not an Italian name. The character was not Italian. The script writers didn't have to play into the stereotypical shtick, eventhough Stallone *IS* a walkng, talking stereotype as it is (so is deniro for that matter). So they could have just given them Italian names to make it more authentic.

Besides this was a mediocre movie at best. Why on earth would they want to distance themselves from the characters that made them legends?

It kinda reminds me of the Highlander movie. A movie about Scotsmen. The only true Scot in the movie is playing a Spaniard.

That makes no sense, since you don't know his ancestry. If you think you know what somebody's ancestry is by name, you're foolish.

Anyways, Sharp clearly doesn't care or pay attention, in story. To deny what was shown is to be wrong. Don't be wrong.

If he's Italian or whatever its not part of his character's cares.

And, nobody cares if Stallone plays an Italian so your idea about avoiding stereotypes is wrong.

They just didnt want to. That's why. They want to do something else. Rambo wasn't Italian either; you dealt with that. Now, try again.

Becauase this isn't supposed to be Balboa and LaMotta.

They wanted the connections to be jokes and homages, not repeat the in-story characters.

A bit unrelated but what kind of name is Rambo? I thought it was an Italian name actually.

PS. Pacino is full blooded Italian and often he will play characters who aren't with nondescript names like Sharp.

Rambo is French or German, typically. The character Rambo got his name from a native american father.

So John Rambo's father is Native American but with a French or German name? If it's French though, then as a Latin name shouldn't it have a Spanish or Italian equivalent?

Thanks for the info btw.

reply

Some old comments, I know, but Rambo is a Germanic name. The author named him after the Rambo apple, which was Swedish, I believe.

The actual character in the first novel and film was given no background at all. In fact, the book didn't even give him a first name.

It was James Cameron, in his (mostly) unfilmed screenplay for Rambo: First Blood Part II that decided to state he was of Italian-German/Native American descent. The movie simplified it to just Indian/German. Morrell's novelization of Rambo changed it to Italian/Navajo b/c he believed Stallone was too distinctly Italian looking to pass for German. His father was an Italian Catholic and his mother Navajo.

Your criticisms are all-over-the-place and don't have good connective-tissue to tie it all together. You're essentially taking issue with the Actors and the the characters as if they are one-in-the-same.

Because it's a different movie, dude. Your logic is so freakin' twisted. Do you think this script was written around DeNiro and Stallone, even if it was, is it supposed to cater to a very specific sensibility that you and probably a few other thin-skinned people would share? No...

Then you go on to say they are both walking stereotypes, yet you are upset that their characters were stereotypical?....okay....You give no real valid reason why DeNiro can't play an Irish character. Your negativity is so all over the place it seems like you just will crap on anything and everything, even if you are contradicting yourself. Which you are.
