I think so. It has some holes but overall I think the positives far out weight the negatives of this movie. It kind of let's you piece the story together on your own and as a result can be a bit confusing but it's an incredibly ambitious and atmospheric ride of a movie
Agreed, and after second and third viewing I really had an appreciation for how well thought out the story was.
To the OP, you will find this to be one of those movies where everyone is on one end or the other... they love it or hate it. The ones that hate it wanted to see see a 60 year old Van Damme still doing the splits and sporting a sweet mullet.
John Hyams trimmed off all the cheese and brought the Universal Soldier franchise into the modern age, no doubt about it. And so far he has gotten more out of Scott Adkins than any other director.
Fans hate it because there is,not enough of the old guard, not to mention JCVD is a villian here, (yes and no) and this movie is way different than the last one.
I liked since I saw it. The movie has this really disturbing tick to it. Brutality that echoed Regeneration is 10 times here, and hard to watch sometimes. It's full of dread, style, and several shots taken from Lynch, Kubrick, and Coppola. Even some Takashi Miike. It is,more horror than, action.
But you get Scott Adkins in three boss fights against Dolph, Arlovski, and Van Damme.
If I had all the time in the world to make a top 10 list of best budget direct to DVD action movies this would be on the list. I don't have time or resources to do all the research and evaluation but I thin Sinners and Saints would be on it too.
_______ "if seagal was thinner this could have been a theatrical product."
