Why was this set in the 90's?

No mobile phones, cassette players, I think I saw 1 CD? This must have been early 90's.

Is there a particular reason the film was set to be more than 20 years ago?

Is it a trick to make people think back to their own time in high school?

reply

The book it's based on was published in 1999.

reply

And took place in probably 91-92 based on the references in the book.

reply

I see, thanks :)

I love it. It actually plays like it was produced in the 90's.

The film takes place school year 1991-1992. So yes, mixed tapes were still made, cell phones existed but cost thousands of dollars and CDs existed, but the technology did not yet exist to make a mixed CD.

Why did the writer choose that year, I am guessing that is when they attending high school.

I was pretty sure the film (not book) was 80s. .. I may have been young, but the 90s were a lot more modern, today-ish even, than this film. BTW, since when was Rocky Horror popular with 90s kids?

The film and the book were both set in 1991-92. Rocky Horror was still doing midnight shows in theaters across the US until the late 1990's.

It still is in many places.

Ok fair enough. But Dexys Midnight Runners? That song really dated the time period for me. Anyway...

well, thats what they do in movies that are dated to take place back 20 + years, just like ' Dazed and Confused".

That song was only 10 years old at the time. I hear 10+ old songs on the high school radio station here pretty frequently. The counterculture kids even acknowledged it as something different from what was typically played at the dance, too.

It would be like hearing "Hollaback Girl," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" or "Feel Good Inc" now.

Come On Eileen was released right after I graduated High school. There were jokes around then saying " What's worse than sweat on Pat Benatar ? Come on Eileen ".

Yeah, that's bad I know.

reply

Come on Eileen was probably something the characters all knew from their childhood. Adding some nostalgia.
