They'd never heard 'Heroes' before?

Seriously? For such big music snobs, it's pretty unbelievable that they'd never heard of one of Bowie's biggest songs.

Bowie who?

It was set in the early 90's. No computers, no iphones, no ipods, etc. "Heroes" was NEVER a top 100 song in the US. It has since become a classic, but for the time period its very believable.
And for the record, they liked it once they heard it. That's good taste right there.

I remember seeing TV commercials for the album before I was a teenager. Honestly, I'm surprised there are that many people who don't know it, especially since it has been covered by other bands.

A little task for you people; Listen to Heroes, next to "We Are All Made of Stars," by Moby. It doesn't matter which order you put the songs in. Both songs just sound perfect together.

While we're on the subject of music in the movie, I'm really glad they had Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses, and Bongwater in this movie:

I was in HS during this period and wwas aware of Bowie from "Classic Rock" stations, but id never heard this song until I heard a cover of it at the end of "The Replacements" with Keanu "WWooooah.." Reeves. I was a choral musician in HS that played guitar and traveled to other 'nerd fests', I mean, 'Honor Choirs'. I also was in HS Speech competitions and that attracted a pretty eclectic crowd also.

Despite their youth, I had some trouble with that, too. It's a very famous song.

But at least they had the good sense to like it.

"You drank too much!" "That's a thing?"

Yes, HUGE mistake in the script. That was an iconic song in the 80s, and came out in 1976. I heard that song so many times when I was young, I can't listen to it any more.

It seemed unfathomable to me, until I thought about it and realized I never heard "Heroes" (as far as I know) until I was out of college and borrowed a Bowie compilation CD from a girlfriends brother.

There's a first time to hear everything. A first time to hear Stairway To Heaven, Smoke On The Water, etc. My first exposure to Bowie was his 80's MTV videos from the Let's Dance album. I graduated high school in 1991, so my experience is probably close to those in the movie. If someone had played me "Heroes" back then without telling me who it was, I wouldn't have known who it was.

So while it seems odd a girl and a guy who love The Smiths isn't already aware of Bowie, its possible.

I was born in 1946. I never heard of Bowie until "Labyrinth" that was him wasn't it?

Sorry, gotta disagree completely. I'm about 10 years older than these kids, and I had never heard Heroes until the late eighties (see my HELP! post). This, with a first cousin who was a Bowie nut.

But, just like the kids in the movie, I absolutely fell completely in love with the song the instant I heard it. I, however, stuck around to the credits of the movie I was watching and made sure I identified the song.

You all seem to have overlooked the name of the movie and its relationship to 'Heroes'. Jakob Dylan's (Bob Dylan's son) Band "The Wallflowers" did a cover of the the song in 1992.

The Wallfowers cover is referenced in both the FAQ and Trivia.
Was it really recorded in '92? It certainly wasn't released until '98, which was the first time (by any artist) that the song entered the Top 100 in the States.
