Did his friends know that he did it?

In the flashback, Ryan was alone in the room when he kicked Bob. Right after this, his girlfriend takes him home and he says the next morning that he was so drunk he can't remember anything. But it seemed throughout the movie that only his girlfriend was in the dark about who really beat Bob. Also, the fact that Keith didn't turn on Ryan when he was arressted makes it seem like they might not really have known for sure that Ryan was the one responsible for it.

I wonder if that one kid that kicked Bob once after the other kid originally elbowed him in the head from behind really even existed, or was just made up to increase the drama of the story? The movie said at the end that one kid who originally punched Bob was charged with assault, but never said anything about the kid who kicked him right after he fell down. I looked up the real story, and all it says was about Ryan getting sentenced to 5 years in prison for manslaughter, as well as the other punk for assault, but never anything about the middle kid. Makes you wonder....

I tried looking up the real story too but all I found out was information about Ryan, nothing about the first boy or the middle boy. Now that you mention it, the middle boy (I think his name was Aaron in the movie) should have been charged too if he really existed.

reply

Yep. Also re: the real story, it said Bob was completely knocked out soon upon entering the house. As you recall in the movie, he was in pain, but was still conscious when he was being kicked...

This has nothing to do with your topic, but I found the fact that these teenage boys had the "balls" enough to assault a grown up to be very disturbing, drunk or not. Even moreso, the families that protected these kids was disgusting as well. On second thought, no wonder they assaulted the man and thought they could get away with it; Daddy and Mommy will just call their attorney and protect them from the consequences of their actions. Some people should be barred from having kids....

I wonder if he really did it or if one of the other guys did it. He didn't seem to remember anything and his confession, after ages, seemed to have a lot of help from the police and he said he didn't remember it. He could have been framed. I did wonder about that. Some of the other guys sounded nastier.

I don't really think you could forget something like that. He never recanted his testimony, either. Plus, if the film depiction is even remotely accurate, you could tell it was eating him up inside. Don't think he would've felt that way if he just punched him and left, knowing he was clearly alive when he last saw him.

reply

True. I only saw half the film. So was he lying when he said he didn't remember it? I've never been so drunk I've forgotten major things but apparently it happened. It's possible he was involved somehow but was coerced into thinking he had a bigger role. I dunno. It's just the other kids seemed more jerky than him so I did wonder. If he was naturally more empathetic and guilt-ridden it makes sense he'd feel guilty regardless of what role he played, therefore making him seem more guilty than he actually might have been. It's just a theory. But you're right, he could have recanted if he ever had doubts.

I just went on the fact that what he told the police matched up with how the man died; I.E. Kicking death. If he truly didn't remember, there is no way way he could've known that.

reply

Ah, that makes sense, if nobody told him about that before.
