Frank Welker's Voice as Megatron

Does anyone know why he changed his Megatron Voice... It was so much better in the 80's version. Even though it has hints of the same tones to it.

reply

He can't quite do the original voice anymore. In the video games, where he attempted to, he just made Megatron sound like some whiny old man with throat cancer.

I vastly, vastly prefer his new take.

Personally I think his Megatron voice is a pleasure to listen to in this version ... I found the 80's voice version just annoying. Megs sounds so wise and majestic in this series .

Indeed, Meg's snark-casm is perfect: After getting clocked with a 'crushing' blow to the face by Ratchet in 'Stronger Faster' he gave the perfect comeback: "Alright, then..."; and after groundbridging to Autobot HQ, he sneers: "So this is where the magic happens..."

I had issues with it when I first heard it but I just chalked it up to Welker being older. Now that I'm following the show from the beginning, I think it's just fine.

It sounds okay, but I prefer Corey Burton's Megatron from TFA; he just sounds more "villainous" in that one. I really didn't like Frank's Megatron voice in G1, because I thought it sounded like a vacuum cleaner mixed with Dr. Robotnik's voice . Though he sounds much better here, I still think Corey was/is the better Megatron (so far).

I'm a fan of Corey Burton's Brainiac and from what little I've heard of his Megatron, he sounds fine. I just can't stomach TFA very well at all.

Also, for me, Frank Welker IS Megatron :)

It is over 25 years since the original I think he's doing a great job and it's one of my favorite parts of Transformers Prime having him and Peter Cullen back.

reply

When he screams, it's the closest to the original Megatron voice.

There's a video on YouTube where he explains why he's "brought the voice down" for this incarnation of the character.

Megatron sounds a lot smarter, darker, more cunning and malevolent in Prime. This is actually my favorite version of the character.

I prefer the current version; it makes the character a more dangerous version of the mastermind we saw in Beast Wars.

I quite like this iteration of the character. He's a lot more serious and quietly dangerous edge to him.

this megatron makes movie megatron look like a wimp.. bay needs to have frank
voice him

reply

Heheheh! Yes...I like the 'quietly dangerous edge' bit to Megs--and he can still take almost anything they can throw at him & shrug it off-'alright, then...'

reply

you do understand frank welker is now 66 years old?

reply

Does that mean that Frank can no longer do the voice of Rumble any more either ?

reply

Yeah I loved the 80's voice a lot better then the new one, not saying the new voice isn't pretty cool I just loved the 80's Megatron overall. Michael Bay needs to stay away from any movie franchise that isn't an original. He should only be allowed to direct new concepts so we can't see him ruin anything anymore. If they reboot it again it would be great to see no Bay and have Frank come back to do Megatron and I'd like to see Soundwave with his computerized voice again.

On a semi-related note, they just opened Transformers: The Ride here in Florida's Universal...its based on Bayformers, but was SHOCKED to see Frank Welker voiced Megatron on the ride! Why oh Why didn't they just use him for the movies!?! His turn on TF: Prime (the show) is the perfect Megatron IMO.

Also related, a few years back he did a brief cameo on Robot Chicken as G1 Megatron...its really obvious he can't do the 80s version anymore..he sounded like a raspy old man!
