Please explain this movie to me!

Having just watched this film, I am in desperate need of an explanation! I thought it was well acted and filmed rather stylishly, however about halfway through I completely lost track of the story. What exactly is happening here? To quote the Wikipedia article on this film, "After she finds her son, the movie kind of derails and becomes impossible to follow."

Apparently if you are poor you are a horrible parent and you are likely to abuse your children for sure, so a beautiful nurse will kidnapped your children and her husband will put them with a rich family who are better parents and better people because they are rich. And kids love their new rich parent.
Lovely story.

>>And kids love their new rich parent.

Not strictly accurate as the child at the end of the movie is suffering from alienation.

reply

While I do get the irony in your post I think the point they was trying to make was that it wasn't abuse but rather neglect. The parents were too self-absorbed in their own misery to prioritize their children's future. The "System" was a way to break the cycle. Kidnap children to bring them to new parents who could secure their future.

reply

Jenny loved her first mom, her second mom and her third mom. She can not decide whether she is happier this way or not. She knows they all loved her though, and always made choices hoping for her to be safe and happy.

The ending is open for interruption, as to whether the Tall Man group did the right thing for these kids or not. I think it isn't that easy, since a child in poverty does need help in my eyes, but stealing people's kids and allowing them to think the worse is pretty cruel.

Your English is a whole lot better than a typical American's grasp is of any language other than English. I wish I was fluent in another language but like most Americans I can only speak English. Thus there is no need for you to apologize.

I am American and we had to take 3 years of a foreign language in High School. What stopped you from doing so?

Edit: I was replying to this comment:

At my high school in the USA, we only had to take 1 year of foreign language, and in college we had to take 2 years if you haven't already done that in high school.

Some of us don't have the skills to learn foreign languages as easily as others. Personally, I had trouble with English up until I was going through puberty and had to be in secondary classes to keep up with the other kids. Before you judge others, maybe you should stick to worrying about yourself.

And the American education system is in a lot of trouble, if you haven't noticed. My secondary English classes were not provided by my school, for example. My mom had to pay out of pocket to help me get to where I am today.

I hope you are not speaking to me because I wasn't speaking to you. I was speaking to the person who said American's are dumbed down and only know one language - English. You are an exception to what I was even saying since you DO speak two languages.

You're still being a judgmental douchebag.

reply

Americans not knowing foreign languages is the least of our concern over the education system.

Really, it's just another way for foreigners to pretend to be better than Americans, whereas if we truly NEED to know a foreign language, then we learn one.

There are much more important things our kids need to be learning than how to speak another language, which 99.9% of Americans can live and be successful without.

Of course, soon, we will all need to know Spanish as our country continues to be invaded.

To sum_bellum who said : "I don't think French horror translates well, when it's not French."

It's a French movie but with the US as a background, and I don't mean just for the filming/acting but for the story too, that story wouldn't work in France. Poor families never end up on the street for example, instead they're put in projects or at worse in hotels (costing us a fortune). Also, towns can't be run down like that, even if half the people are on welfare the town will remove car wrecks etc. (often those towns have a communist mayor, known to do a lot for the poor).

Where I would agree is that is doesn't feel like a Hollywood movie, which is a good thing. Not that Hollywood doesn't make good movies, but more often than not they fit to a model with not many surprises. It was even more refreshing to see such a movie with a typically Hollywoodesque main actress (and an X-Files actor) !

To skotoparavich who said "the nurse chasing and fighting the mother of the child is something to think about. It is needed to give the impression that the nurse was the real mother so she had to be portrayed as a real mother who would do anything to save her child. However, she was not the real mother. She was the kidnapper. So it is a major weakness in the movie."

Others have said that she's trying to save the kid from her mother and to protect her kidnapping ring. But they forget that she cares for the children, in fact she loves them and says that she kept each kid for a time, we see her playing with the kid etc. Also, she can't have kids of her own. So in the van chase she is emotionally involved.

Also, you said that they sold the kids, by I disagree. Even if money was maybe involved, it was to keep the ring going, not to make money. And nothing implies money is involved, the tall man/husband/doctor feels insulted that the mother offers money, yes because his wife is in jail and the other woman dead, but also more generally, he has a tone meaning "we don't do this for money".

The best description of this movie I've read on the net is that it is: a social critique disguised as a thriller disguised as a horror.

reply

wow, yes that is really spot on.

Notably anyone could have directed the movie. With Pascal L. as director, lauded by some for doing the most terrible horror movie, it is all the more a terrific statement.

I've just watched it and i have not got a clue what it was about. Really , no clue whatsoever.
Probably the worst film i have seen this year.
The director should have electrodes strapped to his head while 30,000 volts are administered.
Pure bilge.

I'm lost and after someone tried to explain it...I'm still lost. This movie out and out sucked badly. after the twist with the mom...it went deep left and never came back. if the poor kids are being taken...who were those kids at the end? wasn't a kid in the movie except the snatched ones ....then at the end it said a few months later...then there were big kids all over the place. this ranks up there with the wicker man as one of my alltime ,"WTF" is this this???

reply

OK, other posts here have helped me. Julia was kidnapping kids and selling them to rich people in Seattle. Seems like the others in town were in on it. Julia did sacrifice herself to protect the kids and their "new parents". Dodd seems to be the only good cop. The lady that grabbed David was his real mom. But we see at the end that he still wound up in Seattle.

reply

Julia was part of an organisation that kidnapped children from regions where children were "supposed" living in poor conditions (poor parents with no education, and this creating a vicious circle in which their children will follow the same path)

they don't "sell" the kids, hence the refusal of "the tall man" to accept money when he places the girl with the talking disorder ( I forgot her name ), they "placed" children in families where they believed they would receive a proper education and love

as for David, Julia kidnapped David back again from his real mother with the help of the girl with the talking disorder, and went down into the basement (that was connected with caves) handing it over to "the tall man" who placed David with the woman you see at the end of the movie

Julia, to protect this organisation, who she believed was doing good for the children, took all responsabilities for the "disappeared/murdered" children upon herself,

I had very low expectation going in for this movie, but I had to admit that I hadn't seen the twists coming, so for me the movie worked, the problem is to whom this movie is adressing itselves .... from the trailer it is "sold" as a horror/thriller, and the horrorfans won't like this movie, because it really isn't a horror movie, it's hard to give a lot away from the movie without giving the twists away, for me a good movie ....

reply

Joffreyleblge,

Actually, they sold the kids except the last transaction. The "the tall man" refused to accept money for the last transaction in honor of his partner who chose to sacrifice herself in jail so the mafia responisble for kidnapping the children in other parts of the country will not be exposed.

reply

It really wasn't hard to follow at all.

I thought that this wasn't going to be a good movie after reading some of the threads on here, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Although they should not have sold it as a horror/thriller.

I don't see how it could have been hard to follow unless you weren't paying attention. It was a straight forward story.
