Confused by reasons for disliking this film

I've read some comments and the ones panning it for anything other than political reasons seem odd. I think too many people need to have a happy ending, or a coherent ending or something completely explained to them, because they are devoid of complex thought. This movie is dark. Like Laugier's Martyrs, this movie isn't a feel good movie. It is brutal, honest, but most of all it asks us what is more important. It is a social commentary on everything that is wrong with our "cycle," but explains that we can not just decide to change it for people.

I also thought Biel was brilliant. The movie was extremely careful not to leave any major plot holes, aside from one, which I'm assuming we're supposed to understand (Why Christine would help....was she one of the first?). The ending, in my opinion was perfect, because after stating one side, with Biel's explanation to the Mrs. Johnson, it is Jenny's final three words that place the question to us. Very thought out film, especially the script and very carefully done as not to poke fun at any socio-economic groups, but to show empathy.

It's too difficult a movie to pigeon-hole with good or bad, because there are things about it that should bother us. Like Martyrs, you aren't going to leave the theater or your couch with a warm fuzzy feeling and that is what they intended.

Agreed. I just finished watching the film and the overall flow of it worked really well for me. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and I totally get and respect that, but it's a movie that kept me guessing up until the last 10 minutes or so. And while the ending wasn't really a happy one for each and every character, I felt very satisfied at the same time.

And Biel was terrific in this one. We're so used to seeing her as some sort of a bombshell in a lot of her other movies, but the rawness she got going really worked.

Anatidaephobia — the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you.

I was really surprised by this film. in fact I really liked that it didn't turn out to be just another horror flick. the change of tone towards the end really bumped it up a few notches. I was really moved by Biel's dialogue towards the end about "Change". I can understand why some people might not like it but I thought it was quite deep.

I wouldn't say that was a plot hole, but I would have also liked a bit more background on the relationship between Julia and Christine, just because I was curious and the film leaves you with having to make assumptions about their relationship.

Anyway, I liked it quite a bit, too, and for many of the reasons that you state.

The clearest thing about this movie was that it was no Martyrs. It was nowhere near as good as that masterpiece.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was okay.

But I rated The Tall Man a '6' and Martyrs a '9' (a high '9' at that).

I agree with you. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I personally feel that most people have stopped thinking, and no longer want movies like this, and it's a real shame. I prefer movies which make you think and engage your brain. I like fun and simple movies every once in a while, too, but I really enjoy the ones which make you sit up and go, "Wait, what just happened?" and more to the point, "WHY did that just happen, and what's going to happen next?"

I really enjoyed this movie. There were twists and turns in the beginning, but I did have most of it figured out in the middle of the second half of the movie. I liked the ending.

I am also curious as to whether Jenny/Vera will become like Julia and her husband as she gets older or whether she'll decide to no longer remain silent on it all and tell people what went on in her original town, and what is going on elsewhere in the country. It could make an interesting sequel if someone decided to do it.
