As a heterosexual, white male...
I loved it! I thought it was a very moving picture that, although it had a little bit of an awkward beginning, really had me engaged towards the end. Things I liked:
- Although the issue of gay marriage came up, they kept the focus on the Hester's case and her desire for justice for her partner (instead of using it to blatantly promote a larger cause) which was something I think anyone can relates too.
- Steve Carrel's character brought some lightheartedness and I think he did a great job at portraying the passion and energy of an activist like that.
- Michael Shannon, the heterosexual, atheist, white male of the movie felt really grounded with the right balance of occasional unintended insensitivity from not being familiar/comfortable with homosexuality and compassion for his partner driving him to still do whatever he can in his position.
- The county people denying Hester's request were not overly demonized and, with the exception of the one guy who was clearly against gay marriage, were also shown to be motivated by other concerns such as political elections and public image instead of just being portrayed as one-dimensional homophobes.
