As a heterosexual, white male...

I loved it! I thought it was a very moving picture that, although it had a little bit of an awkward beginning, really had me engaged towards the end. Things I liked:
- Although the issue of gay marriage came up, they kept the focus on the Hester's case and her desire for justice for her partner (instead of using it to blatantly promote a larger cause) which was something I think anyone can relates too.
- Steve Carrel's character brought some lightheartedness and I think he did a great job at portraying the passion and energy of an activist like that.
- Michael Shannon, the heterosexual, atheist, white male of the movie felt really grounded with the right balance of occasional unintended insensitivity from not being familiar/comfortable with homosexuality and compassion for his partner driving him to still do whatever he can in his position.
- The county people denying Hester's request were not overly demonized and, with the exception of the one guy who was clearly against gay marriage, were also shown to be motivated by other concerns such as political elections and public image instead of just being portrayed as one-dimensional homophobes.

As a bisexual, white male, I 100% agree with you. It's a good movie.

I'm a 29 year old straight man who is married. I too liked this movie. I was really drawn to the Michael Shannon character who stood up for what was right. And it's really nice to see Ellen Page again. She hasn't been in many movies lately. Loved seeing her on screen giving a great performance.

As a gay, white male....I almost teared up. Then again, I do the same with Julianne Moore's L'Oréal commercials. I'm kidding!

But not by much. When Hester's fellow officers came to be her side for the final vote, there was a lump in my throat.

Married 41 years.

I loved it, too. People should have the right to love whomever they want. As long as both parties are of age and are consenting, who am I--who is anyone else--to tell them what they're doing is wrong?

Shame on those Freehelders. I hope they go voted out. Oh yes, they finally came around, but while they collected their two, even three, pensions, they wanted to deny somebody else.

Typical fat cat behavior.

I am also a heterosexual, white male

I thought it was pretty good but I didn't love it... I was hoping it would make me cry in the end but it didn't, and also the main focus of the couple got lost in too much politics and Steve Carrell (whom I usually like) had a bigger role than called for.
