Getting tired of this Grrrl Power Crap

King Arther, Centurion, Lara Croft etc etc

Skinny chicks without an ounce of muscle on them who can supposedly beat up and take down enormous, muscle-bound males .

reply

[deleted]

It is a little silly...

...what's next..guys making chick-flics?

Hollywood is sooooooo boring now!

reply

They are incredibly stupid. It is not just movies but tv shows too like Bones, Rizzoli and Iris, Fallen Sky's, CSI shows, etc where the skinny chicks can somehow intimidate, subdue, overpower, and beat up grown men, these women never get their asses handed to them ever either, they always win. It is so silly and unrealistic. Men are not the least bit afraid of thin women like portrayed on these shows and there is no way they can over power and beat up a grown man even with martial arts training. I have never in my life heard of a thin woman beating up a grown man and I see/hear about fights/attacks all the time. None of my bouncer friends have ever even heard of this Hollywood based scenario of young attractive women overpowering grown men, especially the large criminal types portrayed in these movies and shows. What is the point of this, to give women a false sense of confidence/reality that if they take some kick boxing classes they will suddenly somehow be able to beat a man up, it does not happen like that. I think some women who like these type of shows hit or push a man and the guy does not do anything back because they are told not to hit woman so the woman thinks she overpowered or upstaged a guy when that is not the case, she is lucky the guy did not put her in the hospital with permanent scars and eventually they are going to confront the wrong guy.

At least be realistic and show a 200+lb woman the size of Rosanne Barr overpowering a really short small skinny guy, that is somewhat more realistic.

reply

Bones: She doesn't overpower guys by punching them, she uses their weaknesses against them and all that junk.
Rizzoli and Isles: She has a gun most of the time. In addition, she's a cop, she's trained to stay calm under those situations unlike her opponent, who's some crook who thought he was going to get away with it which will lead to mistakes being made. in addition, she /was/ overpowered by a guy, and was permanently scarred by said-guy.
Fallen Skies: Don't watch it, so can't say anything about it.
CSI: Again, to my understanding, most of the time they have a gun.

In none of the shows I've watched did I ever see one of the girls take down an 'enormous muscle-bound guy', either. So please, give me a youtube clip or something. Enlighten me.

Women and men have their anatomical differences, yes, and women will never be as physically strong as men, but that doesn't mean a woman can't overpower a man (and let's note now that I've done it, so clearly it /can/ be done, believe it or not). Sometimes the instances /are/ a bit unrealistic when portrayed on t.v., but honestly, they're not unheard of. It's simply unlikely because men are predominantly the 'physical force' of the male-female relationship, so let me just make this clear that I'm not saying this is an everyday occurrence or anything with a petite girl taking out someone like Sylvester Stallone in terms of size.

Anyway, in other news, have you guys heard about that feminist movement a few years back? 'cause....yeah... It was a pretty big deal.... and it's kind of the reason why you've been seeing stuff like this, and will continue seeing stuff like this.

reply

I think the point is that this particular actress and those that are a similar size should not be cast for these types of roles even if the majority of the ass kicking is done with a gun. I am inclined to agree. What you forget is that even the act of firing a gun takes some strength and a great deal of strength with some of the weapons she seen using. The .50cal shot was very fake but I can let that slide as creative license but then she's wielding two fully automatic weapons with perfect accuracy (demonstrated by her shooting two straight lines next to the column her enemy was hiding behind). Ridiculous. That scene and others like it ruined this movie for me. They could have saved the movie by saying that she had superhuman ability and placing it in the Sci-Fy genre.

reply

It's not whether it's possible, it's the likelihood or frequency of seeing such women. At least 80% of movies now, either have a female ass kicker or a female in a position of authority with a superior intellect. That's what annoying!

And on the flipside, the men in these movies are thoroughly inept, clumsy and stupid.

Yes Hollywood is politically correct and feminism is one of their pet projects right now. Along with hedonism(homosexuality/promiscuity), diversity and drug use.

What is it with seeing a woman being capable that bothers people so much? Seriously creepy how much that angers people.

reply

Is "creepy" really the word you wanted to use? If so, you get creeped out easily... I might say, just like a girl. ξ€Œ

There's nothing creepy about what I said. My issue is with the how often now that the woman turns out to be the hero and the man is portrayed as a bumbling, sniveling fool, that is helpless without her.

I watch movies to be entertained and I expect as much realism as possible. In my experience, it's not realistic to see kickass women around every corner, like you see in movies nowadays.

It's not realistic to see kick ass people in general.

Going to the movies for realism is absurd. Unless you're watching a documentary very few movies are going to be realistic.

I'll let you decide if your response reflects acknowledgement of what I said. Here's my previous response "I expect as much realism as possible." How's that absurd? All movies are realistic to varying degrees. For example, they depict people waking up from sleep, eating and conversing, how is that not realistic? And all I want is to be as realistic AS POSSIBLE.

By the way, my family and I don't go to the theater to see movies. We can watch them for free 2 or 3 weeks later, and avoid supporting the entertainment industry, in it's present state. This is to show our disapproval of the agendas they are crusading for.

Yepp. Some women think that this rule of "men don't hit women" applies to every man, and that this is a GO card for them to be physically abusive. Sorry ladies, if you don't act like a lady and keep it to words, you might not like what happens after that first punch you throw.

But, please, Hollywood, bulk up your actresses like Linda Hamilton in T2, please. I'm sick of stick figures.

This is part of a post from September, but I had to comment it on it over the notion that Linda Hamilton was "bulked up" for T2. She wasn't. She was, as I read once, described as "gone to wire" she was so lean. There was no "bulking" whatsoever.

And Catalyna really only physically engaged one character thru-out the whole movie, the guy she stabbed as a little girl.

*Amarillo* --Euripides? Eumenides!

reply

Thank you Amarillo10! I said the same thing! She was so wiry and lean, add to the fact that she's all of 5'1", she was smaller and thinner than Angelina Jolie in Changeling and Wanted. Her arms and back were fit but that still didn't take away the fact that her waist was tiny and she absolutely did nothing of ACTION besides run away and shoot some guns. Her whole idea of action was looking tough with a snarl on her face, which works when you want to present the woman as nothing more than a prop for the male action hero to save. Don't get me wrong I loved Hamilton in Terminator 2, but she wasn't all that in my opinion.

I...BRING IT!

reply

Bulking up means losing body fat and working out to the point that the muscle is now visible because the fat is removed. Just because she became thinner, this does not mean she wasn't heavier due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. There is bulking up with excess carbs for a fat look, and there is bulking up of the muscle while leaning out the body fat. She bulked up for T2. She was doing pull ups which is very difficult for women. For her to do so required bulking up of her muscles.

reply

That's true namaGemo. But she still looked really damn skinny though. It kinda looked weird when you look at her from certain angles.

Not Often Enough In My Opinion.

reply

A man should never actually hit a woman. We have soo much more of an arsenal that we can use to deter an attack without resorting to physical violence. Most women are scared off by a simple show of male aggression. So a woman comes up to attack you, before she gets close all you have to do is show her your primal side and that is normally enough to back all 5'4 105lbs of her off. Let's say she actually hits you, do you really have to hit her back? It probably didn't even hurt. She will probably bruise her hand and hurt her wrist more than anything. Most women get hurt if you merely block their punch or even if you just grab their arm out the air. I just don't understand why some guys go total apeish and start punching and hitting women. I'm not saying to allow a woman or anyone for that matter to attack you, I'm just saying you can get the message across in other ways without ever having to put your hands on someone.

I used to be a bouncer and I've had women attack me ALL the time. All I had to do was grab them and lift them off the ground or hold them still to get their full undivided attention. After that they'd calm down and I'd walk them to the door while they're crying and hugging on my arm and apologizing and telling me all about their sad life story, and history of depression, and cheating boyfriends, and why they were fighting their BFF just now who called her the B word and nobody calls her that and blah blah blah. Heck, I won't even lightly push a woman out of fear of sending her flying backwards or dislocating her shoulder or something. Anything more than restraining a woman is brutal, distasteful, disrespectful, and just plain reproachable. If it's a group of women attackers (how often does that happen?) then you might have to defend, repeat "defend", yourself more vigorously. So outside of an extreme incident then no, a man (or a real man) should never hit a woman.

My husband is a cop and he says the same things you hsve said here. My husband is also the perfect gentleman, completely respectful of women and, even though I hate using this term, he is as real of a man as anyone can find. He doesn't go around felxing his muscles, talking about how tough he his, but when he has to defend himself, without his gun, he can hurt somebody. These guys who say "You don't hit a woman unless she hits you and then GAME ON!!", they are looking for a reason to take out their anger. Men like you and my husband are what I consider "real men". You can defend yourselves if need be but you don't go looking for conflict and when it does arise, you do everyhting to decompress a situation before it becomes worse. And you both would do anything in you power to never lay hands on women. True gentlemen. I am lucky to have one :)

And BTW, if you're one of the types who think it's fair game to hit a woman then I think you're pathetic. I've had women hit me many times over the years. And I've never felt the need to strike back. True, nobody should hit another person. But if you throw a haymaker at a woman because she hit you then that says a lot about your character. And if you'd seriously hit an old lady with glasses, then you are a truly horrible person.

You're an idiot. I've dated some wonderful women and some real messes. I've called the police on two of them and actually told one girl while I was driving that I was pressing charges when I get to the police station. She was quite shocked when I actually pulled in to report abuse and proceeded to run from the car while I was inside talking to the officers. They went out to get her and ended up catching her further down the road when she realized I was serious.

I just did it as a scare tactic to show I wouldn't put up with someone hitting me cause they had jealousy issues and too much to drink. She never pulled that crap again.

Don't assume things when you don't know people n you sounds like a moron when you do that. My point was women should never assume they get a free pass when hitting a man, not everyone feels that the rule of not hitting women applies.

reply

@nama

True, I agree with that----if a woman starts hitting on a guy thinking she can get away with it, she has to deal with the consequences. That said, I do believe that the guy should try and defuse the situation first---if that dosen't work, hitting back should be a last resort. And,yes, there are women who can be downright abusive and drama queens on top of that---men, as well as women, need to stay the hell away from people like that, period.

reply

No, there's never an excuse to hit women. Women will only attack you if you've provoked them in any way. A woman isn't gonna randomly attack you 'cause she's bored. So if you get punched/stabbed/shot by a woman, you most likely had it coming.

If you're a 'normal' guy you should recognise that violence is wrong and shouldn't want to hit anyone, man or woman. However, and saying this as a woman, men should not let this mentality render them useless in a possible situation where they may be physically attacked by a woman.

I have a friend who, a few years ago, was beat up by a group of girls and he did nothing to defend himself. Why? Because "they were girls." I still chastise him for his stupidity to this day. If someone physically attacks you, regardless of their gender, you have every right to defend yourself and, if necessary, fight back.

And in response to the OP, why yes! Let's go back to the dark ages and stop letting women have lead roles in action films. Hell, let's just stop letting them have leading roles, period.

these women never get their asses handed to them ever either, they always win

I see everybody ignored this point.

Look, I'll be honest, I love action movies. If I see good movie where a woman who is either a good actress or good martial artist who can look like she could beat up a dude beat up a dude, then I'll buy it.

But they really should show the woman get beat up or at least hurt. That's at least one of the ways Kill Bill and Salt capitalized. It humanizes the characters when you see them lose a little.

But on the flip side, someone like Michelle Yeoh, though she is very thin, has convinced me she could kick a dude's ass. Doesn't matter if she actually can in real life, but on screen she sells it. The women in Charlie's Angels (movie) didn't. Electra didn't. Halle Berry in Catwoman didn't. Jovovich in Resident Evil 2-4 didn't. Even Jolie in Salt didn't really, but she made up for it in other areas.

In Kill Bill The Bride doesn't actually beat a dude in hand-to-hand combat, she only fights other women hand to hand and mostly uses weapons or the element of surprise on the dudes.

Linda Hamilton in T2 was diesel, so yeah, I believed she could kick a dude's ass. But Hollywood does not condone their sex kittens with muscles like Hamilton in T2 so you can forget seeing that again.

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

reply

Totally agree with you on the choices. Surprisingly also on Michelle Yeoh. There's something fierce about that woman that others don't have.

reply

When in Faling Skies does that eber happen? The women use guns in it, but Ive never seen them beat up a man. You would think you would pick a programme like Nikita at least. What happens in that is completely ridiculous

reply

I think we're missing the bigger point- which is society's sick fascination with rail thin women shaped like 10 year old boys. Zoe has have a little more curve- maybe- thanks to the Brown. But take all the Resident Evil movies..like really??? It's not even a reality check on whether its plausible- its simply folks only want to see rail thin women in movies- no matter the character. Old women. Middle aged women. Pregnant women.

reply

You make a good point - a lot of the "female power" roles in movies and on TV are getting pretty ridiculous. You know, with the exception of X-Men explanations and whatnot. But women aren't completely doomed to be overpowered by men in every given situation. In most of the shows you mentioned, those women are police/law officers of some kind, have some sort of military training, and are carrying a gun. I myself do, because I'm under NO delusions that if a large man got close enough for physical violence, I'd be in a serious pickle to say the very least. That's why they rarely let it get so close. That said, there are also defensive martial arts practices like Aikido that are designed to give men of all sizes, even rather small (and by extension women) the ability to throw opponents with the proper application of force in specific places on the body. It's no Kung-Fu, but it buys times and may save a life. So no, tiny women are no match for Dolf Lundgren in a fight, but I don't think this is "girl power crap," either. It's just Hollywood exaggeration - Like Bruce Willis running around in each and every Die Hard movie with his gun in an upright resting position with his finger in the trigger well. Completely unrealistic, downright stupid, and completely opposite opposite everything you're ever taught in military training. A women can fire a gun just as well as a man with training. Often with a shorter learning period due to the John Wayne effect.

In my opinion and I am confident to say that women like Zoe Saldana have more skills then men in this world because they practice and train more and all we men do is just lift weights, if you do that and not train then you will never gain no skills meaning you're just big for no reason, Have you all ever seen bully beatdown?

..."all we men do is lift weights"...that's the dumbest sh*t I've read in a while.
...."women like Zoe Saldana have more skills...because they practice and train more"

??????????...are you even reading your own posts?

The producers cast Zoe because Michelle Rodriguez was probably unavailable. Michelle's BODY TYPE would've been MUCH more believable than Twiggy Saldana. Stop trying to make it about men vs. women dumbasses. There's only like 3 Hispanic actresses with name recognition working in American films.
Zoe was probably their best option, except she's not believable as a kick-ass Colombiana..she's just not.

...and what the hell does Bully Beatdown have to do with this new fad of anorexic actresses playing action heroines??

reply

I'm surprised Eva Mendes wasn't considered for the role, or was she? The part would have been a shoe-in for either her or Michelle Rodriguez. You're absolutely wrong, although there is an occasional exception weight and size does play an important factor in Martial arts. Example a light weight UFC fighter would get clobbered by a heavy weight.

If it didn't matter then there would be no weight classes in the UFC. As for the good old days when there weren't weight classes in the UFC, even the most skilled martial artist were getting their butts handed to them by some 300 pound slob that only knows how to ground and pound. WRONG. IF a female is properly trained in martial arts. She absolutely can take down a man. LMAO, what an ignorant comment. Often times women fighters are trained to use their technical lesser muscle power to their advantage and think with their heads. Which I think is executed perfectly in Colombiana. One of the characters even said it. He said something along the lines of "expect the unexpected, shes like mist. always 2 steps ahead of you and she'll never attack you head on". I personally think the ppl who think this movie is unrealistic should think so about every other male action lead who seems to take down 20 men effortlessly. Atleast the female leads tend to have extensive training(ie salt, kill bill etc) While we the audience are just suppose to believe that the men (many of them w/o much if any training at all) are just taking down 20 bad guys because hes oh so strong? reply

The whole martial arts girl power movement came from Hongkong in the 80's 90's, when a lot of those movies came out with female leads. Hollywood never made good martial art fights until the matrix came out, since then hand to hand combat style changed dramaticly.
Even today 99% of hollywood directors can't create a real good matial art fight scene EVEN if the have the best asian choreographer. (Expandebles for example)
That is because of a different mindset, and a different workflow.
There are a number of rules, when you want to make an fight scene interesting.
In Hollywood an director would never give up full control over an scene to the choreographer, while in HK the choreograph has even a say when it comes to editing and camera. Combine it with the fact that alot of actors have knowledge of martial arts AND do their own stunts to a certain degree....well lets just say it shows.
While in Hollywood, the producers have a tendency to choose the most anorexic girl possible, hire an cinematographer with shakey hands an director who can barely film an advertising spot and an former editor of Michael Bay.

No wonder the final product is laughable.

reply

Also, in all of the Asian martial art films, the tiny females are beating up tiny males .

reply

Good post Ryu and you're spot on. Also, the reason there were so many female action heroes out of Hong Kong is that acting in movies was considered beneath a male in Chinese culture. I'm not sure why, but it was considered a woman's thing so they made the most of it.

The female martial artists can really sell their moves though unlike Hollywood women because they have been training for years.

I have to say though that even Hong Kong martial arts action has deteriorated and been a little too over the top for me. It's why I love Ong-Bak and The Protector so much, no CGI, no wires, and no shaky cam.

The MEN AND WOMEN UFC fighters always win against the bullies because they have SKILLS and the bullies had no skills even though they have huge muscles. You men probably still don't even realize because you all are too busy being either ignorant, stupid, sexiest, bisexual, or a closet homosexual. It don't matter how big and strong your muscles are, You could be the strongest man or woman in the world but if you don't have no skills then you will lose and you will still be mindless.

reply

Wrong . Go to places where women do train in real combatives , and you won't see one that looks like Zoe. It's not about her being a women' it's her not pulling off the part. Not to mention MMA artist are in crazy shape, and can easily beat the bullies who are not. The producers always matches the bullies with fighters in the same weight class. Now when they have a 5'7", 110 lbs female MMA artist beating up a 200 lbs guy, please let us know. I believe a lot of us would be pleased to see that.

Because Bruce Lee was crazy strong for his size ! And he couldn't do the stuff he did in movies in real life. If you don't believe it ask Dan Inosanto, his best friend and trainer of his son, or "Judo" Gene LeBell, who beat him and taught him how to grapple. Movies ! Not real.

"There has seldom been seen - this side of a jungle cat -- the incredible sinewy and ripped-to-the-bone quality of muscle displayed by Bruce Lee. He was ripped in places that bodybuilders are just now (28 years later) learning they can train. Every muscle group on his body stood out in bold relief from its neighbor -- not simply for show (unlike many bodybuilders) but for function."--John Little

Power, according to Lee, lay in an individual's ability to use the strength developed in the gym quickly and efficiently; in other words, power was the measure of how quickly and effectively one could summon and coordinate strength for "real-world" purposes. On this basis, according to those who worked out with Lee from time to time such as martial arts actor Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee -- pound for pound-- might well have been one of the most powerful men in the world.
Lee's feats of strength are the stuff of legend; from performing push-ups - on one hand! - or thumbs only pushups, to supporting a 125-pound barbell at arms length in front of him (with elbows locked) for several seconds, or sending individuals (who outweighed him by as much as 100 pounds in some instances) flying through the air and landing some 15 feet away as a result of a punch that Lee delivered from only one-inch away, the power that Bruce Lee could generate -- at a mere body weight of 135 pounds -- is absolutely frightening.
Strength training was Lee's primary objective with resistance exercise.

"If you're talking about combat -- as it is -- well then, baby you'd better train every part of your body!" -- Bruce Lee (from the video, Bruce Lee: The Lost Interview)

Ever seen a picture of Bruce Lee? That guy was muscular. You will gain bigger muscles because that is what you need to do martial arts. Its not just about skills.

Finally someone with some common sense,

People don't have problems with women action stars just because they are women, they have problems with actors like Angelina Jolie in 'Salt', Saoirse Ronan in 'Hanna' and Gina Carano in 'Haywire' who although look like they couldn't open a jar of pickles are beating up people 3 times their size.

Lets just say there is a reason why they didn't hire Rick Moranis or Jim Varney to star in Commando.

If they want to get proper tough looking women to star in action roles then that's fine with me, but don't get women who would have a hard time just standing still in a light breeze trying to act tough.

did you actually even watch Hanna?
obviously not
or you would know the plot meant she was part of a military experiment where they were ALTERING GENETICS of would-be aborted fetuses to make better killers (less compassion, stronger/more muscle, higher pain thresh hold, quicker reflexes, higher intellect, etc)
not to mention her step father trained and sparred with her in combat (which he was an expert in) her whole life and he was twice her size
soooooo

not a good example.

"All men do is lift weights"

This is enough to render your post meaningless. Rather ignorant perhaps?
