Ratings Down. Renewed or Canceled?

Since there are only 2 episodes left I was curious if there was any news on if Necessary Roughness will be renewed or canceled. But I couldn't find any predictions about Necessary Roughness getting a season 4.

So I went looking for the ratings info. Because from what I read it was a close thing that Necessary Roughness got a season 3, and it explains why they changed the cast and the setting --- to try to get the ratings up for this season. But according to this http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/necessary-roughness-season-three-rat ings-28822/ ratings are down from last season (http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/necessary-roughness-season-two-ratin gs-24117/). This season is averaging 0.65 demo / 2.47 million viewers and last season finished with an average of 0.70 demo / 2.50 million viewers.

So all those changes and adding John Stamos to the cast to try to get the ratings up have fallen flat and the show's doing a little worse this year.

Which really makes me question if we'll see a season 4. I hope we do. But, looking at those ratings, I really have my doubts because if USA was expecting an improvement in ratings, they didn't get it.

It's doubtful they expected the ratings to go up. Shows almost always lose viewers and demo as they go along, especially between seasons. It's more a question of how the show stacks up versus other shows on the network and what USA has in the wings for new shows.

Well, I'd hate for the show to get canceled. I've loved Necessary Roughness from the very beginning. It took me a while to get used to the changes this season, but I'm still loving it.

Besides, based on tonight's episode, it looks like it might end on a cliffhanger next week (like they did for the last season finale). And I'd really hate for the show to get canceled and leave it all hanging.

So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a 4th season, but it's not a good sign that USA hasn't made an announcement yet.

They always make the same mistake, don't they? They have a show with modest ratings, they changed everything to get ratings up but they fail to understand that they won't fool the audience that wasn't watching it into thinking it's a new show with a fresh coat of paint, and they will only lose the people who liked it in the first place.

USA did the same with Fairly Legal.

Yeah, I remember that mistake going back a long way. Dating myself, I remember the original "Battlestar Galactica" coming back as "Galactica 1980" without Apollo or Starbuck.

It's never a good sign for a show when they revamp that much. I didn't care for Fairly Legal, but I knew it was in trouble when I saw by the commercials what they did to it. So wasn't surprised when it go canceled.

I really hope it doesn't get cancelled - It's obvious that they're gearing towards a very cliff hanger DUN DUN DUUUUUN type ending, and I don't want to be left wondering. I think I'm part of a small minority that really enjoys the changes to the show - Buh bye Matt you douche, so long Brat 1 and Brat 2, au revoir really annoying best friend, new setting, new people... And TK not acting as much of an ass as he used to. It's been great, and this storyline with the FBI and the clinic has been very gripping.

Also, I hate sounding shallow but... DANICO!!! God dammit they're just starting to get them together after nearly three seasons worth of build up - I'd be SUPER pissed to see nothing come of that :(

Agree!

Although I was skeptical of the FBI story line. The reason I started watching Necessary Roughness was because it wasn't a police procedural. There are so many of them and they all have identical themes.

NR was different and interesting. Then when they started with the FBI, I was cringing but imo they handled it well. Although I don't believe Nico would get away with some of his actions with the real FBI. But what the heck, it is okay by me.

When I looked at the ratings on "TV by the Numbers" it has been holding onto its audience.

A series I have been following on the CW network was renewed with a .5 rating so it seems possible that a .7 that NR is holding onto would be sufficient to insure renewal. Fans need to let the network know that they are enjoying the series. Honestly, it helps.

Would the show on the CW you're talking about happen to be Beauty and the Beast? If so then HEY... I lurk there more than I post *I've literally only posted about two or three times over there* but I recognise your name.

And yes, it really does help - BATB *and to an extend, The Carrie Diaries.. Blech* is proof of that *well, on the CW anyway*

Hi, Little_Sparrow! Yes, that is the show I was referring to.

I didn't even watch galatica 80....because of what they did...

I know..if you have a good formula, I don't know, stick with it.....don't change everything..

they did that with a show here, and although it's still good...in a lot of ways it's not...

so.....it might not have a season four....roughness..

I mean we here in Canada aren't seeing season three...and i'm not holding my breath, with it.....because of what they did last year...

putting it on at midnight...no reruns.......and instead we got repeats, of repeats of repeats of movies...

it needs to leave W.......if it comes back for season 4....and be put on bravo, or showcase....that way we're guaranteed....but, they stopped showing burn notice after season 4...so...

but...the way that they do shows on w or what used to be called women is insane....to the get go..

TNT did something like that for Hawthorne. They got new writers (my neighbor managed a building where they filmed) that totally redid everything, such as killing off characters, and then the show was canceled.

reply

it looks like a happy ending to me. Such a shame, I always liked the show, but this season it really improved in story line, instead of every week a new patient and a bit of sideline romances, this season was a real story and the patients were just a sideline.
Maybe we get a Dani/Nico spin off?

reply

A Dani/Nico spin off???? Aren't we watching the Dani/Nico show now? Why would changing the show AGAIN make more people watch???

reply

They changed far to many things on this show. I mean, there is so much going on. What happened to her just being a normal doctor? They are spending way to much time with T.K and whatever lady they have him with. Plus the thing with the government is stupid. After a few episodes of the new season, I just stopped enjoying it. I watch, but it just all seems so pointless. They need to stop with all the crap going on and just bring it back to what it was.

reply

Tk has always been an interesting character thankfully but I was burnt on him being a DB so thankfully he seems to have grown.
I am happy to see Dani and Nico give it a whirl- I'm actually really liking all te changes! Even Stamos being added... I was not too thrilled with the idea but now that his trusted sidekick was booted, I am liking the story more. I would like to see Dani get back into the actual therapy more tho! They can have her be Dr Dani AND be in the middle of V3.. It did work for most of the season but I'd like more of that and less of the 18 other story lines they had going.

USA- Renew it!!

reply

Final ratings are out for the total season and it's downhill from Season 2....

Season ended at 0.6 demographic with 2.45 million total viewers (http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/necessary-roughness-season-three-rat ings-28822/)

Sad news for the fans today,

No Season 4 for this show.

You know I loved the show, but after this last season I can't say I'm entirely surprised. They took out much of the shows heart, and its fun and removed a lot of her family and home interaction. She would hardly ever get together with TK, Marc Blucas was gone, as was her son just too much of a departure from what was working.

I do agree that shows need to adapt and change as life does, but sometimes when it cycles too far out of control its just too much chaos.

reply

Sad, but Callie Thorne has had a number of projects before, and it seems you can see more of her in Season 4 of Californication now.

I wondered why the TARGET stores had Necessary Roughness on sale early last year. Of course they had inside info...

These days, it seems the shows with a large cast of characters is always walking the high-wire. Rizzoli & Isles seems to be OK with a fairly large cast, but one of the secondary characters died in real life, (I wonder if he got pink-slipped from the show, but he seemed to have his character being built up in the show...). The new DALLAS series has a cast that seems to be growing too, except for anothe IRL death of an actor (JR).

In summary, a large cast = large payroll = need for big audience...

BTW, I would hazard a guess that the Galactica 1980 series was *trying* to duplicate the success of another sci-fi show... you know, a little show titled Star Trek?

reply

In reference to Rizzoli & Isles and the tragic death of Lee Thompson Young: He suffered from depression for years (according to an interview done with his mom and sister), and sadly.... life got too much for the young man. From what I know, he wasn't pink slipped at all from the show... Detective Frost was going to be around for a while.
