Tennant's character is an utter jerk...

Okay, I know that Kelly McDonald's character was supposed to have insulted him when she didn't know who he was...but still. He was so effing horrible to her that I couldn't stand his character at all. And he was my main reason for watching this. Well, him and Kelly. But I just ended up despising him. I just didn't feel like the insults were equal, he seemed a bit meaner than her when they were going back and forth insulting each other. I only saw it once, so I may be wrong, but I don't remember her ever making any insults about his looks, and he made at least one (the part where he asked snidely how they ever fit her into his fiancee's dress). There were probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head. Regardless, that about killed the movie for me. It had it's moments, but having a lead character in a romantic comedy be so utterly unlikeable just threw it for me.

Yeah, I can see why you might think that. He did seem a bit mean to her in parts.

Oh James was mean alright. But you might be too in his position. How long would it take for you to blow your temper in that pressure cooker nuptial nightmare?

Your wedding has to be planned, scrapped, moved, replanned, scrapped, etc., because the paparazzi want to make money off your wedding, Hollywood wants to make money off your wedding, you're dragging an entourage of managers, make up artists and ministers who are making more money the longer the whole thing drags on, and when you finally have your lovely bride standing next to you and the whole drama-trauma is about to be over, you find a smart arse impersonating your bride without you being told anything, and the smart arse overstates the fact that she is here for... the money.

I don't think it was her personally so much as he had just had enough of the whole crazy business, his real bride has gone missing, and the decoy was the only person around to take it out on. It wasn't nice, but it was understandable. Lara was a celebrity used to the craziness and cashing in on every bit of her life, and she was beyond furious. James's life was nothing like that until he got with Lara.

He was stressed out by his new found celebrity, his wedding fiasco, writer's block, and some random woman on a random island tearing his book apart. So it's understandable why he's cranky at first... but he does soften as the movie progresses.

I too found him to get mean out of the blue, convenient for the plot I suppose. Had to go through that fuss of arguing to extend the drama.
