LOVE IT

Lovely sweet film, great for a Sunday evening

I just saw it and I liked it. It was extremely predictable and clichéd, but it was nice anyway. I loved the island landscape and Kelly Macdonald's performance.

reply

Always love Kelly since Nanny Mcphee!

Be polite or ffo kcuf, please!

reply

I enjoyed it. It was light and entertaining. The sweetest scene: the old deaf couple dancing to terrible bagpipe music.

reply

I love that scene. Made me cry.

reply

Love it too! Nice to know that there are a few of us, among the haters :)

Of course, bananas are far more interesting.

reply

Agree with all of this. And Katie's 'American' accent was so amusing!!

reply

I don't mind it being a predictable story, I agree it's a nice one, like also the location of the movie plus the subplot of the dying mother, her life and her wish before she goes. To me, a welcome change from lots of heavy drama with unhappy or with ambiguous or with open-ended endings.

Truth inexorably, inscrutably seeks and reveals Itself into the Light.

Not the kind of movie that blows you away exactly, but really sweet and feel goody. Loved the scene with the deaf old couple, made you all fuzzy inside.

''Cake or death?''
''Cake, please.''

reply

Hey, cliche is cliche because it works. I thought this film was adorable, and quite funny. I loved Kelly Macdonald's "American accent" :P

Yeah they call me the Hiphopopotamus, my lyrics are bottomless..............

reply

''I loved Kelly Macdonald's "American accent" :P''

Me too. LOL! :D
I didn't mind it to be cliche or predictable either. It wasn't ''perfect'' but it was... nice and I felt good when it ended.

And well - David and Kelly were both just great! :)

reply

I agree, it was a sweet film that everybody could enjoy, I loved the castle makeover, wonder if they would come and spruce up my place?

reply

LOL! Makeover scene was a goodone! I'd live there :)

I liked the castle better before they messed with it. I though it was beautiful when it has crumbling and covered in ivy. It was kind of blah once it was cleaned up and rebuilt. The only improvement they made was to clear away all the junk lying around it.

To be honest, I was expecting this to be like any other chick flick but it was actually really refreshing and deeper than I previously thought. David Tennant definitely adds another element of hilariousness to it. This one is one to see if you're in the mood to laugh!

reply

I, like others here, found it by chance. It is a romantic comedy, but somehow (even while it checks all the items in the romcom list) it manages to be what most romcoms are not these days: fresh. What is it? The island? The acting? Yes.

I liked it enough to log on, sit here and write this to encourage more people to see it. You won't regret it.

reply

I normally don't like romantic comedies, but I did enjoy this. I think it was mostly down to the very charismatic performances by David Tennant and Kelly Macdonald. I know the film has had some bad reviews, but I really don't think it deserves them. I laughed quite a lot, as did the rest of the people in the fairly full cinema in which I saw it. Yes, the plot had pinched an awful lot of its storyline from other films, but for me it was still a sweet and charming film. Hopefully it will play well to David Tennant fans.

One thing I am surprised about is the supposed £25 million budget. I'm kind of surprised that it cost that much. It seemed like a much lower budget film.

reply

It was 2.5 million. That is actually my fault, I accidentally put an extra zero when I submitted the budget. I've submitted a correction. They actually had to cut tons both before and during filming because they were working on such a restrictive budget.

reply

An easy mistake to make! That seems more like it, in fact the film now seems like an absolute bargain. I think the filmmakers did extremely well on such a tiny budget. They were very lucky to snap up such a great cast. I gather it was filmed on the Isle of Man.

reply

Half on the Isle of Man and half in Scotland. Most of the exteriors were on the Isle of Man.

reply

yogibear, I remember you from the "Fright Night" board when many of us were disagreeing with that poster who kept insisting that David Tennant wasn't popular in the UK. Were you linked to the making of "The Decoy Bride"? I only ask because you seem to be very in-the-know about the budget and locations, etc.

reply

Lo did someone really say Tennant isn't popular in the UK. There are some real numpties around.

reply

I thought it was a lot of fun. The characters were all very real, no one was "the good guy" or "the bad guy," acting was great, and the shooting was fun. I would have liked to have seen this get a bigger budget so that they could have done more with it. All around, a great way to spend an hour and a half.

reply

I'm another one who says....LOVED IT!

Thought it was great fun. Loved the characters and the scenery!

It’s good to dream

reply

I really enjoyed it, the characters are so likable and it has some great lines!

"What do you hear?"
"Nothin' but the rain."

reply

I really like this movie, have watched it twice now. I wish more were made like this, without: car crashes, gunshots, screaming, and chaos.

reply

It was alright by me, even though the rom-com is not a genre I'm warm to not is it one that caters to me. I thought Kelly was adorable. I didn't find it hilarious but there were a couple of smirks to be had and background characters were more complex than the usual in this kind of movie. Also liked that Lara was likable and not the usual stock despised brats you're rooting against.

James came off as a bit mean for the sake of of the movie, like he needed to cause tension rather than be real. But really complaints are fairly minimal.

7/10
