apparently methane kills instantly

So did anyone notice at the very beginning when the guy jumped through the methane and instantly died? Wait just a darn minute here.. in 8 legged freaks didn't the survivors of the mall attack(the scene where they were trapped in the mall from the spiders) run through an old mine that was filled with methane? I could have swore they did and they were down there for quite some time breathing that *beep* in like it was nothing. So am I missing something?

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Did the makers of this film fail chemistry?

Actually the guy froze to death.. Liquid methane boils at -161 °C (-257.8 °F)... even if it warmed to -100 °C it'll still kill you quickly..

Consider that near freezing water can cause death in ~ 20 min..

Actually... that sounds like utter BS. It's been quite some time since I studied heat transfer in college, but IIRC, to imply that a gas, no matter how cold it is, could be as deadly as nerve gas sounds outlandish at best, if not completely asinine. A very cold gas would no doubt cause you serious freeze burns in a relatively short time, but it would take a prolonged, sustained exposure to drop your body temperature to dangerous levels, something that these Hollywood-esque productions seem to disregard completely (like they did in 'The Day After Tomorrow', another movie that featured 'killer air').

failed chemistry? no-one even looked at it. The movie had several hundred giga-tons of compressed liquid methane that if it got into the atmosphere would kill all life on the planet yet to cross one all you have to do is throw a lighter into the gas and it would burn away in a few seconds. But when you have all this compressed liquid blocked in underground tunnels it just sinks into the solid rock.

This movie was a comedy of errors on the subjects of science, military, scrips, directions, and acting to say the least

Well, cold methane does freeze a persons skin instantly because of the moist in the skin. Would you die instantly of having your skin freeze solid, I don't know. But it was an important plot device in the movie to stop them from just jumping over the openings.

The father Michael tested the gas with melted ice water and it froze instantly, so the tech guy was just like the pilot frozen to death in "2012".

Have you ever been in room full of first graders with gas? I for sure thought I was going to die.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
