Big Rock Mesa + Angel's Knoll 5/23 + 5/25

My on-screen tv guide says tonight's 'Big Rock Mesa' is a repeat, but IMDB says its original air date is today. And 'Angel's Knoll,' airing Wednesday May 25, is new, says my tv screen.

What gives with Angel's Knoll?

None of the LOLA cast are present save the exception of the coroner?

What is NBC doing?

The problem with LOLA was the insistence to make it like Law and Order, the mothership rather than letting it stand alone in the same manner as SVU.

Hopefully the series might resurface on TNT in the same way Criminal Intent has.

It makes me laugh when I see promos for CI on NBC when the shows have already aired on cable!

reply

Law & Order: Criminal Intent has not resurfaced on TNT. NBC moved Criminal Intent to USA Network, which is owned by Universal Studios, the same studio that owns and produces all Law & Order shows. Criminal Intent has done much better on USA than on NBC, because USA actually promoted the show, unlike NBC.

But since that happened, NBC has always aired those episodes on their network after they aired on USA to fill holes in their programming. Not everyone gets cable, or even the USA network if they do have cable.

The problems with LOLA were several:

• The show wasn't well planned; it was rushed into production after NBC cancelled Law & Order.

• The characters and their reason for being there was not explained (the revolving DA situation).

• The stories were thin and predictable, at least initially.

• Skeet Ulrich was a bad choice to play a detective. He just didn't convince anyone with his odd portrayal and mannerisms.

• There was no memorable introduction to the show each week, unlike all the other Law & Order shows.

• NBC never made any real attempt at promoting the show, and they scheduled it in a horrible time slot, and moved it around.

When they pulled it for 'retooling' they kept it off the air for several months, which didn't help the situation at all. And when they did finally put it back on, they didn't promote it, and they didn't explain how Connie Rubirosa came to be in the DA's office in Los Angeles. I know they had a brief, throwaway mention of her caring for her ailing mother or grandmother, but that's it, and it doesn't explain how she got the job over someone already in the DA's office. Even so, the show is now pretty good, despite what other people may think.

So, it seems that once again, NBC never really wanted to give it a good chance at success; instead of putting a show on in a good timeslot, actively promoting it, and leaving it there so it can build an audience, they're still looking for the blockbuster numbers that aren't ever going to come with all the channels we have to choose from these days. They didn't do this with Seinfeld, and it was a huge success, making them billions of dollars.

I think Dick Wolf needs to negotiate better contracts with NBC: ones that include at least a full-season commitment to a show in a guaranteed time slot, with no pre-emptions or substitutions, and a guaranteed level of promotion. And after a full 22-25 episodes, if there's really no audience for it, they can move it to USA Network or shop it to another broadcast or cable network to pick it up and produce it.

That's probably the only way anyone will ever be able to get a good drama on NBC again. Management is obviously lacking in brainpower.

I agree with you on the following points:

The time slot really hurt it but taking it off the air for so long is what killed it. And you're right, they barely promoted it. I really enjoyed this show & liked the ensemble & was disappointed when they killed Skeet Ulrich's character (I'm not one of the rabid fans who were screaming bloody murder at that time but I was indeed disappointed in his firing) & I'm still pissed that we never got to see TJ get his revenge on Winters' killers. NBC didn't give this show the proper chance & we all suffered for it :(

My on screen guide pens them as NEW. I can't recall having seen them though.

I have COX Cable. My DVR did not record last nights episode, because it flagged it as a repeat.

That's too bad. It took me a while to get into it, but LOLA was better than SVU and CSI had to offer this season. I suppose the never-ending parade of stupid reality shows will just keep marching on. Have people simply lost the desire to watch dramatic television? I mean, LOLA is no LOST, or CSI in its heyday, or anywhere near what the original achieved, but it was a decent show.

I totally agree: I prefer LA over SVU anytime and forget about CSI.

My DVR & I are totally confused. The last ep mine recorded, TJ was off to "settle the score". Now he's investigating shot/burned victim with no mention of Mexico.?????

Angel's Knoll might be tonite but I have to wait & see since its listed way down the line on the episode list. I guess I'll have to catch them all on the affiliates now. Is it USA or TNT?

Did I miss T.J.'s revenge?

You've probably figured this out already, but in case you haven't . . .

TJ's revenge was supposed to be the cliffhanger for the end of the season. I'm presuming that if the show hadn't been cancelled, we would never have seen the pre-reboot episodes we are seeing now. Or perhaps they would have played later in the summer. Had the series returned in the fall, we would have seen the conclusion to TJ's revenge. There is a video on the NBC LOLA website where someone, Balcer, I think, talks about this, and from his tone, he's not sure at that point if the series is going to be picked up. I wish it had been . . .

EDIT 6/20/2011: Correction - that video in available on YouTube. It is a SizzleReel created by Balcer for the fans.

Thank you, ohdorothy. I hadn't figured it out... Just disappointed they messed up the cast soo much & that the show was cancelled. Whether the prior had to do with the latter,I don't know.I loved the original,CI and LA. I know SVU's ensemble cast is what has prevented it from being cancelled. There's probably someone for everyone to love (as a fan) in that show.

I just started watching LOLA after having watched SVU for ages and I was totally confused to see Ulrich back in the show. Also, who is the Angel's Knoll episode called that? It didn't seem to actually have anything to do with Angel's Knoll...or did I miss something?

When in doubt, record. hehe I actually was able to get Angel's Knoll on Saturday when they repeated it, because I missed Wed's viewing. I didn't even bother to look at Wed seeing as SVU had had it's season finale. Luckily, they often have repeats of the eps on Saturday, and they repeated both Monday and Wednesday eps then. I am sad they didn't do that on that weekend after the double episode where Skeet got shot. I actually recorded the second episode, but something went wrong on the first one, so I still have yet to actually see the episode where he buys the farm! GRRRRRR Maybe one day...I don't mind watching on the puter, but I generally keep the episodes, so I cannot do that in this case. :(

reply

I hope everyone caught Monday night's 'Plummer Park,' which showed up on mt DVR. Because of the ice hockey championship games, there are no repeats scheduled this Saturday night. The next new episode is scheduled for Monday, June 6.

reply

Funny thing is (well sad too) I was thinking about it early in the day to check my dvr to see if I had that and US of Tara set for record and then I got so angry at the Rockies, I forgot! I hope I had done it like I wanted to. Otherwise, I am going to be really mad. DirecTv gives you a couple of weeks advance or more on the HD DVR listings so I will do as many in advance as I can, like Damages. I don't want to do the whole record series because then it will record repeats and other showings and it will clog up the recording list. I hate to make my dvr angry since it is so full of stuff each week. LOL

I was wondering if you are a Rockies fan after you mentioned Giambi in the 'stache thread. They have GOT to have a better June than they did May!!!

I don't think they could get any worse! Thank goodness one more day till June. Turn the page and hopefully the play will improve!!! We have a ton of games in the division coming up...
Well I am a lifelong Yankees fan, but I did start to love the Rox when they came into the league (so I have an AL and NL team hehe). Then I started watching them more when I got MLB EI (I am thoroughly addicted to my DirecTV you know!). I have really enjoyed watching them the last few years and esp. with Giambino (PLEASE TRACY PLAY HIM AT YANKEE STADIUM OR I WILL SUE!!!). The starting pitching has been okay for the most part (Jimenez withstanding), but the bullpen and the hitting has been ridiculous. I would DFA the whole team if I could the way they are playing. I am so sad to lose DeLaRosa, but I like the kids they've brought up into the rotation like Mortensen. I was happy they got rid of Lopez, and happy for EY, but how can you sit Herrera? To me, he's partially Team MVP...Btw, Herrera, for some reason, looks like he could be Jermaine Dye's younger brother. They look so much alike!

reply

I agree with you on all. They have potential that they are NOT living up to right now. What happened to Jiminez this season?!? Did you catch that game where Giambino hit 3 home runs? Crazy...

I'm a Denver native, and we used to follow the Denver Bears when I was a kid. My brother was an Expos fan because the Bears were their farm team. When we got a ML franchise I was so excited!! My brother and I were at the Rockies first season home opener, and when EY (his kid looks just like him, BTW) hit the home run in the Rox' first at bat, the guy who caught it was sitting right next to us. I told my brother he should have knocked the dude down and caught it himself.

Well, at least the Rox have great fans. We still love them even when they are so aggravating.

EY does look just like his dad. I was looking at EY when we played Arizona and then when EY2 came back up I just was taken aback how much he looked like him. hehe

Gosh, I miss those poor Nomad Expos. I think they would have played the Yanks in 94 if there had been no strike! Larry Walker!!!
I would love to see a game at Coors. It seems like a great place to watch a game. Matt Holliday said in the pregame the other day it really is holding up despite now being the 3rd oldest park in the NL. That is mindblowing! Think of Wrigley and Coors hehe...

reply

I love Coors Field. I forget that it's so "old", because it still kinda feels new, even though it's been over 15 years. I still can't believe it's the 3rd oldest park, though, that is insane.

We used to have season tickets out in right field until we couldn't afford them anymore... It was nice, but it's also nice to just go to a few games a year, getting downtown can be expensive and kind of a PITA some days. We did have the season tickets for the Rockies' first playoff run and for the All-Star game that was hosted here. I also managed to score tickets to the last game against the D'Backs in 2007 that got us into the WS. That whole September run was so damn exciting! They need to get in the game because I really want to make the playoffs this year.

Tracy keeps saying there are a lot of games to be played, but let's get real. You can't dig a hole every year and expect to get away with it. The Yankees did that 3 or 4 years in a row and it finally bit them in 2008. The Rox went from having a decent lead in the NL West to now being, what 4 1/2 back or something? They are in 3rd place!!!!!!!!! This division, for better or worse, is too competitive to mess around. I will die if Arizona of all teams wins the division. They are HORRIBLE.

Okay, they DFAed Paulino and Morales; can Betancourt follow? I know he may have decent numbers on first glance, but his whole routine on the mound before each pitch makes me throw stuff at my tv. I don't know if he's doing something with the ball (spit/scuff/tar???) but it is driving me insane. His appearances are painful to me. I cannot stand guys who cannot find the plate and who take forever to deliver the ball. Games are long enough as it is. I either have to stay up half the night and be droopy at work or watch it the next day which I HATE to do. I am always finding out by accident what happened, and then what's the point? And btw, I am getting mighty tired of this FOX blackout garbage on Saturday because of the sudden change to night games on fox. They sicken me! I actually wanted to watch the second game in a doubleheader on Sunday night between Verlander and Beckett and was blacked out too because of lousy ESPN's rule. Yeah, sure, like anyone wants to see a Braves game. heheh Speaking of which, why are the Rox NEVER on national tv? Half of the league is not on tv. They keep showing the same teams over and over and over. I know a lot of people hate the Yankees for that too. I would love to see one Rox game nationally. I mean, I can watch on ROOT, but still, the Rox get NO tv love! (ah I guess I am happy to see the Rockies commercials anyway, which I love. I love regional commercials to begin with, and nothing can beat Spilly and that Llama Copperbell!)

Jimenez, I think, just got totally discombobulated by his injury and hasn't been able to find his rhythm. I thought he was a few games ago, but his last one was a clunker again, so...
