Was Mai a bad ass?

I was just wondering how much of a bad ass Mai was especially the part in which she shoots her kidnapper with a gun.

Yeah, she was a lot smarter then most kids in these types of films, which was refreshing, everyone in the theater cheered when she shot that guy.
