Why was George upset that Peppy had his furniture?

Did I miss something? That didn't make much sense to me, that he ran off to hos home and tried committing suicide.

It was bad enough to have to deal with the fact that his career as a silent
star was over. But at least George could console himself with the success of
the auction of his personal possessions--the lively bidding that was going on
indicated that he had at least achieved some kind of status as a legendary
Hollywood icon.

When he discovered that the two bidders were actually Peppy's employees, and that she had bought up all of his things and kept them in storage because they
had little value as celebrity memorabilia, he realized that he was, in fact,
just about totally forgotten by the public. That drove him over the edge.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.

Okay thanks! I figured that's what it was but I thought his reaction was extreme so I thought something more might have happened.

I assumed George was creeped out that Peppy was stalking him

@tmaj48 Nailed it.

Reminds me of Phenomenon (1996) - Lace keeps having to deliver her hand-made chairs to George because they're big sellers, but is upset when she finds out that it's really just him who's buying them as an excuse for her to come back.

This and he probably thought she did it out of pity.

It's a matter of pride, the fact that a woman who had achieved success in his field, and whom he cared for had the finances to purchase all his things. I presumed that she would confess that she had them and restore them to him when they became closer as a couple and perhaps when his career had revived to the point that they were equal as artists.

I agree with this interpretation. I don't think it was so much that his final bit of pride rested in his being able to sell his belongings; rather, I think seeing his furniture in Peppy's home was the final straw in losing his sense of self. She had to bail him out of everything--even down to the movie props.

You mean apart from it being mega creepy she bought all his stuff? BUNNY BOILER

Stupid male pride. If it were me, I would have been delighted that my friend had saved all my stuff by buying it.
