just watched it on TCM and I was knocked over by how good it was - the charming actors; the set; the dog; the joy the pathos ( now I'm going over the top) but in my mind deserving the oscar as best picture

Here is the list of the other nominees from the pack that The Artist won over. Nothing really iconic here. Even if you polled 100 people "name 3 George Clooney movies" most would not include The Descendants, good as it was, which was very.
So The Artist won. It was a thin year. The Artist was adorable though. Sure it was gimmicky, but it worked. And I too love the dog.

shareHm... it would seem none of the nominated pictures fits in my personal top 5 of the year. I'm pretty OK with The Artist winning though - and would have been with The Tree Of Life, likewise.

Indeed, just a very weak year for the Academy. The Artist was just the lone cornstalk in a very poor crop.
