The accents were horrid

especially Toni's. She sounds aboriginal.

I was just about to agree with you, the accents are so over the top, but then you made it a racist comment. FYI I work with Aboriginal people, none of them sound like that.

... And where do you guys live?

There's different Australian accents especially when you go towards Northern Territory plus Shaz is from Tasmania so god knows what their accents are since I've never met an tassie aussie before and I've been here all my life.

Good on ya, Hayleyfern. My sentiments exactly.

The only racist here is YOU

'I say I'm dead.. and I move'

They're meant to be over-the-top broad accents.
The family don't fit in. They don't try to talk like they're middle class like Aunty Doris or the neighbour with the toothbrush do.

It's only hard for Aussies to listen to because there's so much baggage attached to being too "ocker" in this country.
To the rest of the world we all sound pretty much like that.

(btw I think the prettiest accent in Australia is the one that Deborah Mailman has. Toni Colette doesn't sound quite as good as Aboriginal if that's what you're comparing her too.)

I don't know about the rest of the cast, but Anthony LaPaglia is actually Australian... So... His accent is generally his own accent.

reply

The cast is all Australian or New Zealander with the exception of Liev Schrieber who is an American married to an Australian.

reply

The accents were accurate for the small town look they were going for, hate to tell you this OP, but maybe you've been stuck in cities all your life...

reply

Hmm rather strange comment considering most of them are Australian so although their accents may be exaggerated, they're real!

reply

The accents are horribly over-exaggerated. I don't know anyone who talks like that, and I don't live in the city.

reply

I grew up in Melbourne and for the last 10 years I've lived in a small coastal town. The accents were spot on!! They weren't so prevalent in the city but they were about. And living in the country you hear them everywhere! My best mate sounds just like Shaz haha

As an American ('Seppo') who lived and worked in Australia for a few years I have to tell you all these characters sounded like 100% 'dinkum' Aussies. You seem to be confusing the really bad fake American accents these actors use in American shows with what you imagine is the true Aussie accent but they are not reality - the Aussie accents in this movie is the reality.
