One of the best films of the year

I just finished watching Blonde on Netflix. I can confidently say, regardless of what else comes out this year, this will be the most divisive film of 2022. Some of the reviews have been crazy and people have had strong reactions, both good and bad. So let me address a few questions first.

Is Blonde pornographic? No.
Is Blonde exploitative? No.
Is Blonde misogynistic? No.

Blonde is masterfully directed by Andrew Dominik and features a great performance by Ana de Armas. It's beautifully filmed and effectively haunting. For me, Blonde is one of the best films of the year. Love it or hate it, Blonde is a must see. My rating is a 9/10.

I fogot today was the release date. I'll have to remind my wife. She's a big Marilyn fan.

reply

I agree.

I mean, I can understand why some folk wouldn't like it. If they're looking for a more typical biopic, then -- well -- this ain't it. It's also a fairly unrelentingly gloomy film. But, you're right, it's none of those things you listed. Exploitation and misogyny are themes of the movie; that doesn't make the film exploitative or misogynistic -- and those things that have made audiences uncomfortable? Guess what? They're supposed to.

Some of the reactions I've read have been frankly bizarre, and would make an interesting study all by itself.

Interesting too that the Nick Cave and Warren Ellis score seems to evoke Angelo Badalamenti, because I thought the film (and curiously enough the reaction to it as well) has echoes of Fire Walk With Me... and that ending is fairly Elephant Man... so that was clearly a deliberate choice.

And, yes, that's a superb -- and frequently uncanny -- performance by Ana de Armas.

I'm going to reserve final ranking until my end of the year tally, but I agree that Dominik, Armas, and everyone else involved deliver a top-notch film that uses a lot of creative license to explore some heavy adult themes. This is definitely an awards contender.

reply

It is not getting good reviews from critics or audiences by the looks of it. Doubt it wins any awards probably won't even be nominated.

reply

Don't know why it's getting bad reviews as I really liked it. It's beautifully shot and really enjoyed her monologues throughout. She acted the part brilliantly. It kept me interested throughout it's almost 3 hours and I could have watched it for longer.

reply

I haven't seen it yet but when I do I shall compare it against RRR, which is currently my film of the year.

Really worth checking out if you have Netflix...

reply

From what I've read most people are complaining about Ana De Arma's accent and also that the book the movie was based on has taken several liberties therefore becoming fiction... reminds me when Quentin Tarantino takes historic figures in his movies and makes up events that they were not involved in.

I haven't finished the movie but I am so far disliking the structure, too unconventional/surreal for my taste... I assume it was used to emphasize that she was not emotionally stable and suffered some sort of mental abuse... too crazy for me.

reply

I really, really liked it too. But I can see why these kind of biopics are divisive while something like Elvis is well liked.
I checked twitter to see what people were saying. There's so many dumb moralistic takes.

reply

it's not really a biopic.

reply

you're right. I shouldn't have used that word. A fictionalized version of her life, more like it.

reply

And yet all the people in it are real and all the events are real. The Jrs are real but this relationship isn’t. So have you actually seen it?

reply

i have not
