I heard of this movie before November and they said they'd release it around Christmas but people are still waiting. I think it looks fantastic too.

"Ugh. just like that"

I don´t know why the BBC doesn´t show the film in Britain. I saw it on German television and think it´s very good. Smith is great. I give it 9 points.

Look like it was just a minor issue for the BBC of where to find a good slot for it in the schedule. It's being broadcast some point during the week of the 19th-25th March, no exact date yet. I think it's likely to be on Sunday evening, as the other big Sunday night drama, South Riding, is coming to an end the Sunday before, so this will probably fill the Sunday night drama gap. Looks superb from the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2CQwQxkRe4

I'm really looking forward to this. It's annoying to think it was shown in France and Germany first - what the hell is the matter with the BBC?

It depends on if it is a full BBC production or a joint one like several others they've done recently and they took it in turns to premier them.

Well, I don't know for Germany... but in France it hasn't been shown on any channel... It was broadcasted two weeks ago on Arte which is a wonderful channel, a kind of little haven among other channels that are getting worse and worse...

Sadly I missed it, but I saw they are broadcasting it again on Wednesday night. I'll be sure to record it this time. I too am looking forward to see it :-)

It's on tonight (saturday) at 9.30pm on BBC2. There's been lots of adverts for it.

What did you think to it, Alma?

I actually have mixed feelings about it...

I liked the film very much... but was somewhat hindered in my enjoyment by a growing feeling of antipathy towards Christopher's character for reasons I can't quite explain.

It surprised me. So far I had a quite positive opinion of Christopher Isherwood, particularly since I watched the documentary that has been made on him and artist Don Bachardy (It's called Chris & Don. A Love Story - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1138002/ - Do you know it?)

Maybe I was just not in the right frame of mind when I watched it, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that I watched again Cabaret a few weeks ago and couldn't help but make connections between the two films as Christopher and his Kind progressed. Either way, I guess it's a good thing I recorded it. I'll watch it again in some time. I think I'll read the book first though...

(ps. Sorry for the late reply. It's a been a rough week)

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts and the link to Chris and Don: A Love Story. I didn't know about the film but now I've added it to my rental list.

I enjoyed A Single Man - both the film and the book - and Cabaret has always been one of my favourite films. I must read Isherwood's Berlin Stories.

A belated thought...

I ended up reading both The Berlin Stories and Christopher and His Kind last spring... and the least I can say is that if you have the occasion to read these two books by Isherwood, please do so; Christopher and His Kind in particular. To me, the film doesn't do justice to this amazing memoir. I've seldom read a book with both so much emotional honesty (as far as his feelings and his progressive self-discovery as a gay man is concerned) and insight about what was happening in the 30s in Europe... And the lovestory between Christopher and Heinz, which is truncated and a bit distorted in the film, is very much worth knowing, too.

All in all, reading the books increased my reservations about the film.

Thanks Alma. I read the first of the Berlin novels a few months back but I haven't read the second one yet or Christopher and His Kind. They are on my "to read" list but I might push them up after your recommendation!
