Mark Millar On Chances Of Kick Ass 3 Movie

With the last book now out, Mark Millar got asked about the chances of a third movie during an interview with comic book resources:

Relevant bit quoted below :

I can tell you exactly where we're at. I'm always 100% straight up with these things -- to the point where I'm always revealing stuff two or three years before it's supposed to get out. I know I told you immediately after we got the first weekend after "Kick-Ass" came out that we were doing "Kick-Ass 2." And Matthew had engaged Jeff [Wadlow] by the following September, but no official announcement was made until the following year. But what you can always do is look at the opening box office to see how much money it's going to take in and see what the development possibilities will be.

With "Kick-Ass," it was a no brainer. It was made for $28 million and made $100 million back and then made another $140 million on DVD. So for the money guys, it was a $28 million investment that made $240 million. That's a slam dunk. You're getting your sequel. The second one didn't make as much. It cost a little less at around $24 million, made $61 million and made about $100 million again on DVD and TV rights. It was still profitable. It was by no means "The Lone Ranger." But does that mean we'll make another one again? I don't know. It's definitely up in the air, and we'll just have to see. Matthew is a guy who I trust to make that decision. If he decides he does want to do it, I know he'll get it done well. And he's got the movie rights, so it's ultimately his decision. I speak to Matthew every day, and we haven't discussed "Kick-Ass 3" so who knows? The option is always open.

Basically reiterates that it's still not confirmed but could happen. Also confirms two things that I've been saying here for a while: The second movie made money and was by no means a flop and ultimately it's Mathew Vaughn (not Universal or anyone else) that owns the rights and will make any sequel decision!

I really hope it gets made! Better to be made sooner than later, though. I honestly do not think a third film will happen, but I feel slightly optimistic because I know Matthew Vaughn cares about these characters, so I would think he would like to see a proper conclusion.

I LOVE what Romita said about Jim Carrey in that article.

As for Jim Carrey, I know I'll never work with that bonehead again, so let me say this. I think Mark and I have talked about this before, but here's a guy who could have capitalized on the character he played and played it toward his anti-gun stance. The character he played gave up weapons -- gave up guns -- and became a good guy. Anybody with three quarters of an education could have figured out how to fold that idea in with their anti-gun ideas. He's not a smart enough guy to do that. He cashed his check and took his money, and then he went and pulled a bunch of crap on our film. I say "our film," because a lot of people worked on that. He made people suffer that had jobs and needed every dime from this. I'm not talking about Mark and I. I'm talking about people in the offices and people behind the camera that worked their butts off for this. He took money out of their pockets, and he should be ashamed of himself. I've always wanted to say that, and I'll stand on a chair and look him in the eye and tell him that's what I think.

Basically I also think that is good news. At least there is still hope.

*If* Millar´s numbers are correct, the film made a solid profit and I see no reason why they couldnt make a trilogy then *unless* Vaughn doesnt bother.
Is he happy with the way the second film ended the series or does he feel the need to give it a proper ending? I hope for the latter.

And now that the comic series has been finished I think it is time that they sit together and talk about a third film. My guess is they need a decision about this in 2014. The sooner the better.
They cant postpone a third part indefinately with Chloe and Aaron getting older.
It needs to be made in 2015 or 2016 *at the latest* imo.

It's all about the Benjamin's. If they ended the franchise now I would be done with it. Of they make part 3 they need to get night bitch back.

It's all about the Benjamin's.
It was smart them not doubling the budget of the first. That might be the play that ends up seeing 3 made.🐭

IF they make it. First thing they need to do is find a way to reverse a lot of stuff in the second film.

SPOILERS

Then they also need an entire new writing staff that knows how to write a movie. Nothing in the second was believable at all. Hit Girl just turns into a wimpy girl because she was asked nicely? No. You make something bad happen to her so she see's the consequences, and then you have someone ask nicely to go with it. The villain going all psychotic wasn't believable at all, make him do something more, show him going insane better.

Jim Carreys character was the worst in development. I don't understand him at all without the other characters talking about his back story. So he happens to be a mob boss? He's a badass how? The whole time I thought he was just some military drop out and other people found him cool for some random reason.

Night Bit-- saying "keep out masks on" should have had more meaning to it. She should have been someone important later, wasn't. It should have been an identity thing, wasn't, instead they were all shouting names to each other, leaving personal paper work on tables (for some random reason, mostly just to carry the story) etc...

Personally I would have his dad put the costume on. One, it would have been hilarious seeing him fit into the suit and carried out to the police station. Then you could have the villain find out it's Kick Ass' dad when he breaks into the prison, instead of the kid randomly telling him out of the blue and then having no further purpose at all.

I'm sure people will cry "that isn't what happens in the comics" but come on, half this movie didn't make sense at all without some digging of your own.

The minds behind this thing ran out of ideas half way through the first movie. KA isn't funny, it's not thought provoking, it doesn't have deep characters, and the hero action isn't very good.

Millar made a lot of money with his pretty unimaginative story.
