When the children arrive in the town where they're going to watch the train, they spend the night with an elderly couple.

Did they know that they were going to stay with this couple, or did they just pick them out at random when the policeman confronted them?

Are they the girl's real grandparents?

They were not her grandparents, and they did not plan it. Their trip got saved by Megumi's acting. :)

They are also saved by the fact that the couple are missing their daughter (and there are hints at an unhappy story there), and they 'think they are dreaming' when Meguni appears.
