Lack of Focus

I just saw it and as a trans person myself, I think the film lacked a lot of focus. What was the point of Laurence coming out as a TS MtF to the plot more than to complicate her current relationship? Was the point to dwell on trans issues or just to dwell on relationship issues? The film had issues deciding what was more important and I felt the TS issues were often left as a general and vague plot complication but never really dwelled upon.

There was also a lot of focus on Laurence being unable to pass which frustrated me to no end because if Laurence were taking hormones, Laurence would definitely over time have no issues passing. You can do a lot of things to pass such as dressing "right", using "right" body language and speech patterns and to speak with a high-pitched voice for MtFs.

I know there's a limit what acting and make-up can do, but to compare to FtMs having it easier because we pass more easily is not dwelling on the issue that FtMs are often made invisible whereas MtF are made extremely visible and this movie was just a case in point.

Coming out as TS is extremely difficult and people take it differently. I am lucky having a very understanding and loving family in this regard, but focusing on Laurence's issues not passing that really can be made into non-issues over time didn't feel overly authentic.

It also bothered me a lot that many misgendered her throughout the film and no one corrected them.

I agree. I also felt it was quite superficial and not very well developed. I like the director's cinematic style though.

Well I agree that the movie lacked a bit of focus on trans issues but then there are many movies with focus on that. I think it depicts relationship issues with transpeople pretty well. I'm mtf trans myself and I think it's really hard for any transwoman who went through male puberty to pass completely.

I mean people who are transitioning younger and younger but passing flawlessly by starting at 37 you have to be really lucky.
