Please people, wait for the movie before complaining it's too short. A lot of decent movie under 3h were made in the past, it might work again.

reply

I saw it and it works ! It didn't seem like 2h40. Excellent movie by the way !

reply

If anything it's too long. I fast forwarded some scenes.

Laurence Anyways is a very absorbing film filled with engaging characters and a wonderful, expressionist style which creates intense emotions fitting for its subject matter. Xavier Dolan's auteur vision never disappoints.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

reply

It's 1hr too long

J’suis Acadien and french canadian!

reply

Its more like 30 minutes too long

reply

No, sorry to say, cause I liked Dolan's work thus far, but it really is an hour too long.
Needless to say I found it horribly self-indulging and frankly quite detestable.
Still, I really think he has a voice and I'm looking forward to his next one...

reply

I think they could have skipped the women in drag portions of the movie(other than to show there were people who understood him and would help him), the scene with the friend sitting across fro Lawrence(wig and all) asking odd questions, and the long shot of Fred going to the Ball. So maybe 15 minutes.

In general I think they could have condensed down Fred's angst. It became a case of "Girl, **** or get off the pot."

reply

the long shot of Fred going to the Ball
One of the best shots in the film! It was an old New Romantic's dream!
I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

reply

Wow, let's get rid of all the best shots of the movie!

Why don't you take up film editing?

reply

If those were the best shots, you were expecting something else from this film rather than what I thought was the strongest point of it...the transformation of
Lawrence #1 and the relationship he had with his Frédérique.

To each their own.

And yes, I might take up film editing.

Someone I know in MTL has seen this and he said the screening was disastrous. Apparently the film is indeed too long, at least an hour could be trimmed and nothing would be missed.

"I have a plan: ATTACK."

reply

Well, there's the questions of whether trimming that hour would actually improve the film or not. I agree you could trim it and probably not lose much plot or character, but you would lose being in the film, and probably lose some of the cinematography, or dialogue, which I just loved.

It's a very thorough telling of a story. And though I thought I'd seen things with similar plot before, I think they were all documentaries or shorts, no dramatic features like this. So it's a case of size doesn't matter.

reply

I agree with you. I have paused it too many times to catch a break. The cinematography is amazing and the music wakes you up, but other than that, nop. The story is not that compelling.

reply

Personally, I love a good, long film. Emphasis on "good". I have much faith in Dolan though, so hopefully this will be as good as I'm expecting...

That's long for a transexual love story.

i enjoyed every second, covering 10years, in that time was good, its not the hobbit

As one who could easily have used an hour or two more of I Killed My Mother, this is GOOOOOOOD news =)

Don't mistake hate speech for free speech. Remember, hate speech kills!

I would watch it for 5 hours, In his short career, Dolan has never disappointed me, Laurence anyways is my personal favourite, Suzanne clement was just brilliant, she moved me to tears, and I am glad Louis Garrel declined the role because Melvil Poupaud was absolutely great!
This is not a story about a transexual, it's a love story between two people who loved each other, it's very realistic. Dolan only talks about what he knows, he surely knows what feels like having a forbidden love but he knows nothing about don't feeling comfortable in your own gender.
the final scene when Laurence tells Fred that is sex chance wasn't the only reason why things didn't work out really touched me, sometimes love isn't enough.
At First Fred had the illusion that they could make it work, she said she would be "the man", she never stoped loving him, even after he built a life with another man, she left everything behind so she could be with Laurence one more time.
I never saw laurence as the "transexual" and Fred as the poor unlucky woman, I saw two people who loved each other deeply.
Xavier's real, beautiful, tragic love story was wonderful.
I can definitely say I'm his fan, He represents everything I wanna be and do.
