They all suffered the exact same side effects(which never happens). I don't think they were testing a drug for benefit. I think they were testing the efficacy of a bio drug for the military or something. Even a control group as small as 5 won't have the exact same side effects.

That's exactly my take on it as well. When Toby said what he said near the end and wouldn't open the door or help out, that pretty much confirmed it for me.

While this answer makes sense, especially with Toby's comment, what doesn't make sense is that they would let them all run free as it were.

This would also assume that both the doctor, and Madeline the nurse were not a part of this knowledge. This seems like an awfully destructive way to go about testing a military bio drug with the assumed results that violence will be involved.
