Jane the war protester???

The scenes of Jane's character protesting the wars were very ironic wouldn't you say?????

Define ironic.

I protested the "wars" (actually the Viet-Nam conflict) and I'm a former Marine who served honorably in Nam, 1965-1966.

[Joe Pesci voice]Am I ironic to you?[/Joe Pesci voice]

I've always supported Jane.

I don't think you understand irony. Jane was a war protestor, so why shouldn't she play one? If she was supporting the war in this movie you might have a point.

reply

I wasn't sure what the irony was. By 1969, there were many war protestors. Jane was one of them, as was I.

That is NOT irony. It would be "ironic" if Jane had played a war supporter that hated war protesters. In other words, the opposite of who she was in real life during the Vietnam War. You likely meant isn't it befitting that Jane's character protests war in this film. And, yes...it is befitting. :)

Definition of Irony (as applies here): "A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result."

I hope this helps others understand what you surely meant.

Hanoi Jane hopped on that bandwagon. A lot of people really have nothing better to do than protest about something. Usually the young and stupid grab onto these causes. They made a real difference by staying home and smoking drugs all day. It really helped pass the time in between protest rallies. It was easy to point the finger at returning soldiers. People used to spit on them in the street. If there is any irony it's that those same vets were often the last to support the war yet were shunned for defending the freedoms people take for granted. That's why at ANZAC day we say "Lest we forget". Wars support freedom. That's the problem with the war on terror. It's used as an excuse to increase all sorts of big brother type surveillance on citizens. Therefore it's also a war on freedom. Also the enemy is so broad as to have no clear end in sight, there just isn't ever any talk of an end to this alleged "war on terror". People are dying like in every war on both sides both soldiers and civilians, only this war isn't supporting freedom.

There are sociopaths in all groups. I was involved in several protests, all for causes I passionately believed in, and no one around me, including me, ever spit on anyone. Nor did any of us march because we were bored. In fact, most of us were busy graduate students who took time out of our busy schedule for a cause we couldn't ignore.
