Only thing clever in the whole film....

is how the genesis byline is a reference to the bible and not to what truly could have been an awesome prequel about the priest confining the witch in the attic of the apartment building. sigh, oh what could(should) have been.

The witch?

1) The girl in the apartment at the top of the building is demon-possessed, not a witch. What's more, during the REC films she seems to be hiding in some kind of shadow realm that is unlocked by the nightvision function on the camera. (Odd idea, but definitely original.)

2) There are many children in the attic, but none are the original demon-possessed girl. These children are deliberately infected by the viral version of demon-possession that the RCC has developed in order to produce a cure.

Yeah, I'd quite like to have seen a genuine prequel, though I don't know that showing the girl being trapped in the attic would have been the best part to tell. I was rather more interested in the failed exorcisms that led to the decision to create the virus in the first place.

Paco Plaza has stated he wanted a different feel for rec3 and I totally believe dealing with the failed exorcisms and the machinations of the church could have been a devastating and thoroughly disturbing psychological thriller rather than a run of the mill zombie film with failed attempts at humor and thoroughly undercooked romance.

Imagine if they had kept the found footage motif and just presented a cold look at the years spent trying to cure and contain this girl. Showing us the progression through video taped journals and audio tapes. Presenting a man of God doing His work and absolutely failing. Losing his faith in God and the Church he serves. It could have been bone chilling and a wonderful expansion to a mythology I absolutely enjoy for its *beep* craziness.

Thanks for the witch correction. I know she's possessed just with the spells used to keep her trapped and the well seen at the end she is far more powerful than the subordinate possessed.

God Recs3 was disappointing but I don't feel it was bad just...rote. Which is something the rec series hasn't been. Oh and thanks for not sounding like a douche when responding. so many people act so snobbishly when people misspeak on the interwebs.

I have a question for you with juame doing rec4 think the series will end on a high note. I have never been a fan of his solo work always technically nice but the scripts are often messes I had always assumed Paco Plaza was the secret weapon behind this series success but now I don't know.

Anyone else get a Demoni, Demoni 2 vibe from this series. Not a rip off but a kind of...spiritual successor.

reply

I don't get the Demoni and Demoni 2 vibe to this movie at all. For one thing both Demoni (Demons) movies had guys survive at the end. The first one had a lone male survive it all. And the second one had the guy and his girlfriend survive together. Not like this REC 3 crap!. Both Demons movies kick this movies ass!!!.

It's so epic that the fact that it's epic is so epic in it's self.

Paco Plaza is the main creative mind behind REC, but the 3rd one... is a mess. So... I don't know what will Balaguero do by himself. I have hope, but...

It wasn't the night vision on the camera, it was that she only became a physical presence in the dark, which is why she disappeared when the lights were on and the door becomes visible. The priest in the third film mentions something about the fallen angels/demons or whatever were sealed in the darkness or something.

reply

Ah, that's cool. I'd taken it to be that the night vision unlocked them. I didn't think of it as darkness unlocking them and night vision just being needed to see them in the dark.

The only clever part of the movie (and a teasing one at that) is where she has the possessed person she's attacking pinned down, she's kneeling on top of them. She's trying to start the chainsaw and the way she's crouched/kneeling we almost get a look at her lady box. Besides that part it's ho hum. She looked good in the ripped dress.

It's a shame that we didn't get a film about the priest in the attic. Even if it wasn't found footage, that could have been a great movie that would ably expand the mythology of the series.

It's a lot like Paranormal Activity, each film is more convoluted and contrived, muddling the mythos instead of illuminating its secrets.
