One of the worst films of the year

Just finished watching The Gray Man (2022) on Netflix. This big budget attempt at a blockbuster is bland, derivative, predictable and generic. It feels like a rip off of several other better action films. It fails to be entertaining or fun. The screenplay is cliched and poorly written. It has a good cast who try to do what they can with the material, but no one is able to save this thing. The Gray Man is one of the worst films of the year. My rating is a 4/10.

Man, I thought it was much better than that. The airplane scene was incredible, the actress who plays Claire was fantastic, and the dialogue was snappy and clever. I’ve not seen these three elements assembled like this in any predecessor

reply

The airplane scene was decent, but not that great. I agree about Julia Butters who played Claire being fantastic. The dialogue was terrible and sounded like they stole it from other movies. Nothing snappy or clever about any of the dialogue.

It's definitely better than a 4/10. I gave it a 7 myself.

I was feeling a little stressed yesterday and made a point to grab some food and sit down and watch this movie and I think it was just what I needed at the time.

It's certainly not a great film or a classic, and the OP is right that it's entirely derivative of others movies, but it's a pretty well-made hodgepodge of previous action movies.

It did have a few good scenes and some good dialogue, but I was just laughing out loud at parts that were meant to be serious. It was just way over the top unbelievable. When the CIA wants to get rid of some gray area assassins to clean up some loose ends, the last thing they would do is shoot up a public square, killing dozens of cops and civilians as if it's okay and no one will investigate later who was responsible and why they did it. And then one elite assassin, who has already been shown to be able to dispatch a half a dozen trained killers at once, is easily captured by a girl with a tranq dart.

I thought the airplane scene looked like crap, especially when compared to something like the HALO Jump in Mission Impossible Fallout.

This was better than Thor Love and Thunder in my opinion. I was slightly angry when I left that - I was expecting another Ragnarök

I've totally given up on Marvel. Disney ruins everything they touch.

reply

Personally, I liked it. I give it 8/10.

reply

wow. that bad?

reply

Yup, it sucked.

reply

i may have to take a look to see how bad it is.

I thought it was mildly entertaining, but not great. The movie didn't have much depth, but relied heavily on action sequences and one-liners to carry the movie. Kind of like a lot of Schwarzenneger movies. A fine movie if you just want to turn your brain off for a couple of hours.

This was never supposed to be Shakespeare. As a fun, action-packed popcorn movie.....it's great.

reply

A decent analysis.
I thought it was like a cross between John Wick and Commando.

reply

I'm a little more generous in my rating. I gave it a 4.1/10!

reply

Damn, if you gave it only a 4 if must be horrible! Hell, didn't you give Manos The Hands of Fate an 8/10?

reply

Lol no. I gave Manos a 1/10.

Aren't all films some sort of rip-off? You can always watch a movie and find a comparison.
