Way better than 18% RT score indicates

I've been fascinated since the first previews came out and finally got a chance to watch it. I cringed a bit renting it with a RT score of 18% but it was actually pretty good.

For a genre type movie it was above average. My only real criticism was that it was about 45 minutes too short, the universe and its backstory could have had more exposition. But the pacing was good, the story coherent and a nice mix of action and mythology and not too much saccharine family emotion.

I don't quite get why it has been panned so much. There are movies with RT scores in the 60-70 range that suck hard in some way or other.

Finally got around seeing this one too, holding back because of all the negative reviews, even if I love sci-fi/fantasy-movies. And I agree with you. Not that bad at all! Found myself quite entertained. So much so that I didn't even notice it was so short until I read it here :D

I guess people just expect movies to be at least 2h+ these days, and pan all under 2h as bad (which to be fair is often the case). Not here I think. Maybe a lot was left out after editing, but in that case it was probably for the best, as the result was at least like 7/10 good in my book. Not a GREAT movie, but quite good. Never got around to reading the books which guess helps, as it seems the fans of the books are among the harshest critics.

It's way better than 18% on RT or the 5,7 rating on IMDB.
