IMO Thomas Jane...

Even before the Mist I thought Thomas Jane would make Roland come to life. I'm not upset over the casting, but I still think Jane has a better range than Elba. Neither are amazing actors, but good enough. Thomas Jane should have been chosen. Oh well.

Would have been a great choice! He's even painting Roland at the beginning of the Mist!

reply

I definitely could have gotten behind that casting choice.

reply

Except he can't act to save his life and Idris can

reply

Well, that's an opinion, not a fact.

Personally, I've always wanted Toby Stephens to play Roland.

reply

This would be your opinion. I don't think he is a great actor w/ great range, but he's good at certain types of roles. I think Roland would have been a great fit for him. Idris doesn't possess any more skill than Jane. They both generally play the same guy - themselves - in different settings. It's no knock on Elba, I just think Jane would have been a better fit.

reply

That casting would have made some sense and smarter casting. They'll be having none of that in this film.

reply

He would have been a good fit for Roland because he isn't black.

reply

Because he's not Black is the only reason you agree? That's a little shallow. If Thomas Jane were black I'd still think he was a better fit. He just has a stoic quality and silent danger about him I don't get from Elba. Elba just doesn't have the edge I always felt Roland had.

Hey, Storm... I've mentioned this movie before, but have you ever seen Beasts of no Nation? It's a tremendous movie in its own rights, but it might make you feel better about the casting decision. I'm pretty sure he shows more of an edge in that than in previous roles. Or you could come away feeling worse about it, I mean, you might see something that I didn't. But since you are actually trying to give this a chance, I thought you might want to see a little more of what Elba has to offer.
