What was the apocalyptic event and how will Chell survive?

Was the apocalyptic event spoken about in Portal 2 the Combine? If so, how is Chell going to survive the outside world?

The Apocalypse was the events of half life 1 and 2
Basically aliens invaded earth.

I think by the time Portal 2 had taken place, Earth was somewhat back to normal. In the short views we have of the outside world(being shot into space & the corn feild) Earth looks like it's on the repair. She may have been lucky enough to actually just sleep through it all.
