Portal 3 ideas?

We all know Gabe Newall can't count to three. But if they did make a third one, what direction would you like to see it take?

More PORTALS! More CAKE and MORE SPACE!

Crushing's too good for him. First he'll spend a year in the incinerator. Year two: Cryogenic refrigeration wing. Then TEN years in the chamber I built where all the robots scream at you. THEN I'll kill him.-GLaDOS

Could just make Portal Episode 1 and 2

Some of the people who made their own levels for the community test chambers had some brilliant ideas. There was one series that involved using gate/door force-fields that transported the player to a different time period within the same chamber. Meaning that you traveled between the chamber during an earlier period when it was still new-looking and intact, and a later period when the room was in ruin. Changing something in the earlier period would create a change in the later period that helped solve the room.

Another series of levels took place on the moon, which affected movement and therefore one's abilities and interaction with the room because the gravity was different. And in at least one of these levels, causing turrets to fire bullets that hit a window caused everything to be sucked out of the room because of the atmospheric/space vacuum effect.

There was also a series whose levels experimented with what I guess could be referred to as "dimensionality", which were trickier to describe. If I recall correctly, doing something like pushing a button would change gravity in a different room of the test chamber, or change its floor to a wall, or ceiling to a floor...

All of these ideas are things that weren't already used in the first two and could be used for a another sequel that would make the gameplay feel new in significant ways.

In addition to having the moon as one of the settings, if a third were made, I'd also like to see it use some outdoor settings too. A somewhat RPG-ish open-world element that perhaps could be explored and returned to, without taking too much of the focus away from the puzzle-solving element. This kind of concept was already a major part of what made 2 (and to a lesser extent, 1) such an awesome experience. I.e. the parts of the game outside of the puzzles, involving the exploration of the old, abandoned Aperture facilities underground. The third game could give us more of this, except this time at ground level (and maybe even higher).

I've heard some ideas popping up here and there on the mighty web, some being quite brilliant while others may not work so well. Examples:

1. More Cave Johnson - While Mr. Johnson became a fan favorite due to his humorous self recordings which are heard throughout Aperture's lower levels, his story has already been told in full, including his tragic end, so there isn't much left there that isn't already known. Perhaps if a story is told that takes place while Johnson was still alive (no pun intended) he could make a comeback, but that is entirely up to Valve. "After your finished testing we have another surprise for ya. We're gonna disassemble ya, put some science stuff in ya, and then put ya right back together again".

2. The fate of Rattman - Possible but not very likely. We know most of Rattman's story within the games, which includes a certain side story told in a comic book. What we don't know is what happened to him after Portal 2, but since he isn't the main focus his ultimate fate will probably remain ignored...at least for now.

3. Chell's back story revealed - This would be awesome if only to fill in a very large gap in the story. We know some of her story like that she was present on "Bring Your Daughter To Work Day" and made the potato battery project who's plant had taken over Aperture by the events of Portal 2. We also know that her battles with Glados were orchestrated by Rattman due to her tenacity. Other than that we know nothing about our main protagonist so a story line that reveals more of Chell's background would be sweet. Even if it had to be told in pieces like a big puzzle, it would still be a good move on Valve's part.

4. More innovations with the portal gun - Yes, definitely. Inventing new ways to utilize the portal gun would keep the puzzle solving action new and fresh, and could probably even add a new direction to the story. A portal gun that can fire off up to four portals in a room at once could also add both ease and dynamics to the game play.

5. The story continues with Chell on the surface, and possibly higher - This could prove interesting, especially if there are any other surfaces, besides the ones that are painted with moon rock gel, that can project portals. This could also lead to the next spot on the list...

6. A cross over with Half-Life- It's possible but probably won't happen. It would seem that Valve is trying to keep the characters and elements on their respective sides of the story, although a team up between Chell and Dr. Freeman would be pretty sweet, but I digress.

And finally...

7. GLadOS destroyed for good - I hate to admit it but I really did come to like her by the end of Portal 2 and so it would be sad if we had to say goodbye a final time, especially since deleting Caroline from her system completely seems to be the only way to truly "kill" her. On the other hand it would also finally put her threat to rest, it all depends on how you look at it, and what Valve may have planned. Just remember that it would also mean bidding a fond, final farewell to one of video gaming's most beloved villainous vixens. Yes, you would like that, wouldn't you? You cold, murderous monster.

All of these, as well as the innovations by our fellow players as mentioned by Aizyk above, would make for an amazing finale to this great series. The question is when, or if, Valve plans to give us the third installment to Portal so that we can finish it up. Only time will tell. Now, who wants cake?

Chell must not only get herself through the levels, but also her family (maybe her parents and a couple of siblings or something)

not only can you play as chell but, to get across the level you have to switch between Chell and her family, this would also be an optional co-op campaign, or you can play as the other members of chells family yourself

play as cave Johnson, how funny would it be to play 2-3 levels as cave Johnson? Glados vs Cave Johnson would also be hilarious

maybe some zero gravity test chambers? that might be fun

The Ability to hack turrets and use them to your advantage

More wheatley and space core

Maybe black mesa guards could invade, and chell, glados and wheatley must work together to get rid of them, you would have to portal the black mesa guards from the facility to the moon
