Ok so what did Martin Sheen mean when he said *spoilers*

*SPOILERS BELOW*

What did Martin Sheen mean at the end when he told Geary that he should come work for "us"? He knew Geary was a double agent? Maybe its a minor thing but it just didn't make sense that he would know that.

The double meaning is a fun kiss off line for the movie (especially as the Topher-goes-back-to-his-family-and-not-Moscow seemed a bit tacked on) but I took it as Sheen offering him a job at the CIA (i.e. to move from his current position at the FBI). Sheen sees something of a young Richard Gere in him and wants him on his team.

He's done her. He's done Mrs Lop-sided.

reply

Good point I totally forgot about the fact that he works for the FBI while Gere and Sheen are in the CIA.

What *I* wondered after Sheen made the offer was whether or not Topher would consider moving to the CIA as a better opportunity to continue spying for the Russians, or if he would do it simply as a good career move and dedicate his allegiance to the U.S. And, of course, that's what the director wants you to wonder! I guess he's already cast his lot with the Russians and if he were to stop spying for them, he and his family would almost certainly be put at huge risk. Further, if he told his handlers of the offer, they would definitely want a mole inside the far more dangerous (to them) CIA... Best for him to say nothing and stay put at the FBI.

reply

yeah, that's kind of what i got, he knew he doesn't have it to leave his family, but highland unwittingly(or wittingly?)offered him an out by giving him a more desirable position, this will give him an excuse to continue to stay in us and be with the family. Now the juicy question is, is he gonna be playing both sides, switch sides and stay put?

no thought, no reflection, no analysis, no control, no intention, let it settle itself.

reply

The ending seems to suggest a sequel.

I think Martin Sheen's character took in the crime scene and rightly figured it had been "altered."
Just the incredulous look on his face when he's told a man who always used his watch-wire to kill tons of people, somehow lost hold of it this last time and was killed by it instead...

So I think he does mean...come work for us, AND come work for US (the USA.)
